Could Jeffries have beaten Johnson in his comeback with modern training & PED assistance?

I can't imagine them being totally useless. This is the poster boy matchup for PEDs helping out. Older, out of shape fighter who relies on strength, power, and conditioning trying to come back in a sport with lots of clinch grappling. Against a non-roided opponent in a match setup emphasizing endurance over skill.

If they don't help Jeffries AT ALL in this setup, you might as well just unban them...

Yes, that makes more sense than them not affecting the outcome.

And I don't remember saying peds wouldn't help at all, it's just that it's not enough to overcome ring rust, age, and a clash of styles.

I was just responding to BCS8's characterization of your position, assuming it were true. I myself was making no claims about what you said; I was just giving my thoughts on the claim standing on its own.

    quote me
So you are arguing against yourself. Well done :applaudit:
    Ruiz is on this list:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WBA_world_champions

Well done you won your strawman contest. Pat yourself on the back, champ.

    ^Your opinion.

Yes you did, dimwit. From the beginning I said Holy was "pretty good" YOU are the genius that immediately translated it to mean all sorts of other things.
You can spell out your strawman 1000000 times. Go for it. It's not my argument; never has been. That's on you. It's all your fiction.
Because it amuses me to string you along to see how long you can go before you realise you're spinning your wheels in place.
Those goalposts are outta sight now.
Amazing! You scored yet another point in an argument that you are having with yourself. What's your score now? 120-0? Everybody is amazed.
It was the original subject. That's why it matters.
At least you're discussing the actual subject at hand. I disagree with your reasoning but, kudos for trying to stay on track.

Holyfield was 8-1-6 after Lewis. That is not abysmal. He was 6-5 in his 40's which is less good but still not abysmal given that he routinely fought good fighters. He was competitive.
I'm sticking to the original subject. You are the one attributing arguments to me and refusing to quote me.

It's kind of difficult to say. I mean apparently he was a major porker when he started training for the comeback fight. We all saw what extreme weight loss did to Tyson Fury. He did not look good in the first fight against Wilder. I suspect Peds would go a long way in mitigating the side-effects of weight loss. But as people have pointed out, it may have been ring rust messing him up even worse than the weight loss especially if he did little sparring. So give him another 6 months and training and sparring with some top modern coaches and yeah, I think he would have done much better. Does he win? No freaking idea. But I'd elevate the chances from zero to 'maybe'.

    I quoted you multiple times

You clearly don't know what goal post shifting means. I assumed you were smart enough to understand what I meant after spelling it out for you. I won't make that mistake again.

You are also accusing me of some of the very things you're doing. Hence why I anticipated this would go nowhere.

We are way, way off subject. If you want to continue discussing the merits of Holyfield's wins post Lewis make another thread.

The key is to play the long game. With modern medicine, Jeffries can wait Johnson out until about 1947 or so.

On a superficial appearances level, if anyone looked like they might be on PEDs, it was Johnson.

Always a reasonably shredded fella, he went from 194 lb v Burns to a rock solid 208 lb for Jeffries. Clearly gaining considerable muscular bulk without undue, extra fat.

Despite losing all the weight, Jeffries’ body on the other hand appeared to have aged almost double since he last fought. He looked incredibly drawn and tired at the ring intros, apparently stressing over the fight for quite some time and getting little or no sleep the night before.

Does anyone think there was any truth to the rumours of a possible fix arrangement that Johnson pulled the plug on at the 11th hour? For a time, Jeffries appeared reasonably confident and happy in camp but then his mental state apparently nose dived. Personally, I think not but does anyone else believe it at all possible?

In my more pessimistic moments, I wonder whether most or all of the early championship title history was as fake as early wrestling. (That is, fake often enough that you can't tell the difference.) Most of the participants were crooks just by virtue of being prizefighters, and you hear about a fair number of fixes. Not as if we could tell a legit fight from a dive with the film available either.

Enough to do sparring until Freddie Roach and Emmanuel Steward were satisfied.

Hey, he could be sparring till this day, I don't care. ;)

When you read newspaper reports of fights back then, some don’t read quite as great as they were later made to sound in retrospective summaries.

During the course of fight, there are lots of references to booing, demand for more action, random cries of fix, accusations of quitting etc. LOL.

The contradictions in old fight reports are also off the wall.

In the one, single authored, fight report, you can read boxer A being lauded for his ability to soak up punishment while, at the same time, that same boxer A will be also complimented for his wizardry in defence. Wtf?

I guess back then if you managed to duck and avoid one punch out of twenty you were the circa 1900 version of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
