First off bat ,in my eyes Joes a great fighter anyway. Miles ahead of his time ,one of the greatest defensive heavyweight s ever. But what if the card's had been played different ? We have to imagine a world with no Louis and Walcott gets the backing that the Brown Bomber received. With Blackburn keeping hold of Jersey ,Joe is seen as a great talent and treated as such . So with no Louis around and Jersey built up as the promising star ,how far does Walcott go ??
To do so you have to believe Joe Louis was the reason Walcott never reached that level. Its as implification I don't completely buy into.
Jersey Joe was my wild card in the heavyweight division, he was erratic but had a rough start early on and did not always have the proper nutrition and may have had to dump a few fights or put the handcuffs on to get a title shot. His fights against Louis, Marciano & others show us what Walcott could do on a good night. I always rate him high to upset anyone, he was skilled and had ko power in either hand, great footwork and boxing ability
I actually think Walcott went far, despite setbacks, because he was given more opportunities than most (How many title shots?). Ultimately, he achieved his goal at a very late stage, in his career. His way up, to that point is a great story. I'm not sure that Joe Louis was in any way central to Walcott's setbacks, either. In any event, Walcott is an All-Time Great, to me.
This content is protected Bare minimum can we all agree he put on ATG performances and was party to ATG sequences?
I love the style of jersey joe but the truth is that ot is not about what could happen but what happened for real and he lost against cans. I would give you hall of fame but no atg
Even if one makes the case for Walcott not being an ATG, he's one of my all time favorites. A truly unique, skilled, classy fighter with remarkable longevity.
Walcott overcame to reach the level is what makes him an all-time great. Is it possible to reasonably speculate what could have been? Obviously there was a detriment resulting from his road, Perhaps he also benefited?
I see him more as a fringe ATG, than a full ATG. It's possible his early hardships and setbacks are what made him so good though.
He is an ATG in my eyes. Wins over Ezzard X2, Johnson, Maxim X2, Bivins and for many scribes at the time one over Louis. Other quality wins in Ray x2, Murray, Shepherd x2, Baksi, Simon Heavyweight champion of the world Top ranked LHW Good enough for me.
