Inspired by Fergy's post re Joe going the distance with Lennox Lewis.

I feel that Joe would stand an excellent chance. At his best (Circa 1973-77) he was at least as durable as prime Tyson foes James Tillis,Mitch Green,James Smith and Tony Tucker.

Let's forget about Joe being stopped by Frank Bruno when the former was around ten years past, and at least thirty pounds over, his prime.

Yes I think he could maybe stand a shot, Stevie.
If he can survive those first few, horrendous rounds, when Tyson s attacks like a maniac, then there's a chance.
Bugner would know he s in for rough seas and adapt for it.

I said yes. I believe he “ could “ survive to see the final bell against Mike Tyson. This doesn’t mean that it’s certain. But Joe Bugner found ways to linger in there with the best of them. He was a tough durable guy and knew when to take chances and when not to. And it seemed to be the trend with Tyson that if a man survived the first 6-7 rounds with him that his chances of going the distance vastly improved.

He could. I don’t think he would though. I see this one ending pretty quickly

I’ll probably be slammed for this but here’s a thought. Tyson’s Tyrell Biggs was scheduled for 15 rounds snd in Bugner’s day 15 was the norm at world level. Now Mike usually started to become less effective after 6 rounds. Let’s give him the benefit and say 10. Now if Joe comes to survive and gets past the first 10 rounds could he start to take over from say 11 to 15. Could he just clinch it in points. Now before getting laughed out for this consider James Tillis was heading for a draw over 10 before throwing that wild hook to only get caught himself. That knockdown saved Tyson’s clean record of the time. How many other contenders could potentially beat Mike on points if the bout was over 15 rounds and they first weathered the inevitable storm over the first 1 to 6 or 10 rounds?

Prime Joe was never stopped. He was TKO’d in his teens and in his 30s, but in between, no. He faced Ali and Frazier, and the hard punching tough guy Ron Lyle, and survived. So I could quite conceivably see 1970s Joe going the distance with 1985-87 Mike.

1988 Mike though…hmm, maybe not so easy to see the final bell for big Joe. Tyson didn’t like hanging around too long in his fights that year!

No way, Tyson would be all over him, it would be like Bugner's fight against Shavers but Tyson had more weapons in his arsenal.

I can see this but more so the 22 year old version that became the only man ever to KO both Michael Spinks and…albeit an older…Larry Holmes. Throw in his two round destruction of Tony Tubbs…a man who, like Bugner, was never stopped in his prime (except by Tyson) and I struggle to see even a safety conscious, durable guy like JB surviving too long against this version of Mike.

According to Tillis, Tyson hit like a sissy compared to Shavers. Bugner retired after the second round with a bad cut. Bugner-Tyson would look more like Bugner-Frazier, and Tyson was essentially a two fisted Frazier. Joe might go to war with Mike once he learns that Tyson couldn't hurt him badly enough to stop him. Bugner could also opt for drowning Mike in deep water after having won over the Championship Distance four times before Frazier. Bugner had very fast hands and that deadly right, enough to gain Tyson's respect.

Body shots didn't do it for Frazier and they wouldn't do it for Mike either. Bonecrusher clinched Tyson into frustration. Bugner's version of that would be to recline against the ropes and let Mike try to expend himself. In that position, the 5'10" Tyson would find the 6'4" Bugner's head to be a far away target indeed. The bigger man's reach was 82" to the shorter man's 71 inches.

This is the same guy who thinks Bugner had Foreman's number. Trust me you're getting anywhere with him.
