Could Joe Calzaghe even make it the distance with a prime Roy Jones?

David Telesco did, so I'm thinking yes, Joe Calzaghe can last the twelve rounds with Roy. Wouldn't win but he could last twelve rounds.

I doubt it given Calzaghe's wreckless style. The more you throw, the more openings you leave for Jones. Even Jones in his shattered state landed some hard, flush counter shots on Calzaghe. Imagine a prime RJ at 168. Calzaghe's agression would be his undoing.

RJ isn't a killer in the ring. If his opponent isn't aggressive, he is content with a UD. But if you come after him, you leave him no choice but to counter and those are the guys that he usually KOs.

but IF he was caught like that in the 1st vs a prime Roy would have been over quicker....having said that Calzaghe wasn't a fresh young fighter either when they fought!

 

But at the same time, if Calzaghe tastes Jones' power early or, he might fight cautiously and easily last the distance. It's all about which Calzaghe shows up.

 

I think he has a very good chance at lasting the distance. He has a great chin and great movement. He would loose either way, but lasting the distance would be very possible.

 

IF a shot RJJ could knock down Joe C, a prime RJJ would have finished him off in the 1st round.

 

It would probably look like RJJ-Del Valle. Little bit tricky to get to Joe in the early rounds but eventually settles down and intimidates Joe with his bodyshots and speed.

 

Calzaghe would have beat Jones even more convincingly back then. At that time his hands had not been broken numerous times and he was a monster puncher.

Cal would always have found a way to combat whatever Jones tried. Jones would have been pressurised so much that he would have had to take his breathers while he leaned on the ropes covering up, and whenever he did that Cal would have been busting up his ribs!

 

Pretty sure Roy's prime was at 168 as well as at 175.

 

Calzaghe did not get knocked down by Jones: Roy hit him with his forearm. That's illegal but the ref didn't see it.

Calzaghe figured Roy out after one round. Against a prime Jones, Calzaghe would have done the same. If you hound him and stay skin-close to him, Roy falls apart, because he relies on distance, like a karate fighter.

That said, I'm not sure who would win, because Roy could move pretty fast with his legs. But it probably goes the distance.
