Could Joe Calzaghe have been a better boxer if he switched trainers 9 years ago?

The boxer is just more important than the trainer.

 

As far as fitness goes, nobody could improve on what Enzo does. Joe's stamina is well documented

On the boxing side of things, I can't see how it would make a difference. Joe has never been one to go in with gameplans A, B, C and D or specialised sparring. He's a natural fighter, he adjusts to his opponent in there

What would you change with his figting style? There is nothing you would want to change, his strengths are his weaknesses. He can be open, but he throws a lot of shots. He can be off balance, but then again he throws from strange angles which makes him a stylistic nightmare

So overall, no it wouldn't make a difference. Infact, he just wouldn't be as comfortable, which would adversely affect him anyway

A different trainer may have tried to implement his own ideas on Calzaghe, meaning Calzaghe would lose some of his flair/natural reaction to things in the ring.

 

Just look at what Manny Steward has done to Wlad. He is now the biggest girl in boxing. Switching trainers does not always work for the best.

In that instance no. Personally, I think Calzaghe is well suited to his dad....its a relationship that has worked and will continue to work.

I feel given his style, it would be very difficult for any trainer to play to his strengths like his dad can. I believe anybody else would have tried getting Joe to fight more conventionally, which could well not suit him.

 

i think we could look to naseem as a point of reference,both him and joe are such phenomenal fighters with so much natural flair and unorthodoxy.when naseem moved away from ingle other trainers tried to make him more of a boxer and it had an adverse reaction on him as he no longer held the dangerousness of fighting in unique positions,i feel that if joe left enzo that could happen also.

otherwise,enzo has made better fighters out of limited fighters than they could have hoped for,enzo macc most certainly wasn't world title material but through enzo he developed a great technique that brought him to the mantle of the cruiserweight division,only to be beaten by a man with superlative talent (no shame in the loss).
rees winning the WBA lww title,who would have thought that a year and a half ago ... for a natural lw to step up and take on a much bigger more accomplished fighter in m'baye and have the stamina to dominate into the 12th round was unreal and i could only put this down to enzo.

The only point about Joe Calzaghe's career i think you can moan about is the fact that his two biggest wins and possibly his third (Hopkins) have come at the tailend of his career.

Calzaghe could have forced the issue more, I think he was as happy as Warren was with defending against bums.

It was only after beating Lacy that he's got the confidence to challenge the best.
