Could Joe Calzaghe still be undefeated if he fought Roy Jones Jr's opponents?

Toney, Hopkins, G.Johnson and R.Johnson beat him. Griffin also has a very good chance as well

Not a chance in hell. I am not gonna get into it because most sane posters already broke it down but lets keep it real here guys.

Count out Ruiz and the CW's? If you take Joe on his best night, I think he's capable of beating them all in one off fights

But here's the thing, Jones beat a lot of top rated fighters over a long period of time, and lost to some top rated fighters when he was a bit older. If you put Calzaghe in there over the course of a whole career, he probably picks up losses because you have off nights, and facing different styles is difficult as well.

    No.

The reason Jones beat Ruiz is because Jones had the punching power to keep Ruiz honest.

You can see the recognition bordering on shock/fear on Ruiz's face when he gets hit flush by Roy on the nose, and realizes that he isn't going to be able to maul him, in case he gets dropped/stopped by the much smaller man.

By comparison, Joe Calzaghe had a pair of feather-dusters for hands. He could hit Ruiz with the heaviest artillery he could muster, and John would blow it off his shoulders like dandruff, and just keep coming.

Just because Jones made Ruiz look easy doesn't mean it was. Calzaghe possessed neither the power nor the smarts nor the movement to overcome a 30lbs weight disadvantage (probably more, as I doubt Calzaghe could get up as high as 193lbs).

He'd either get ground down and stopped on accumulation, or chased round the ring and beaten up for 12 solid rounds, with the occasional shoeshine flurry on the move the only thing in his favour.

It wouldn't be a close fight. Calzaghe was many things, but he was most definitely not a fighter whose style and attributes would have leant themselves to fighting heavyweights. :nono

I didn't bother to read this, I already said twice Joe wouldn't beat Ruiz, that's why I said 'count out Ruiz' :huh

No way can Joe Calzaghe move up to HW, Beat John Ruiz, drop down and beat a Hungry Prime Tarver in his very next fight... No way.

    This...

I think Glen Johnson presents a very interesting style match up for Joe... Calzaghe fans tend to say, well Johnson lost to fighters Calzaghe beat, when they themselves realize boxing is a sport which styles mean the world and who beat who doesn't always work when picking a fight against two fighters meeting each other for the first time.

I am pretty sure Joe knew Glen would pose him problems... Another fighter that gets brushed under the rug as a bum Montel Griffin.. At his very best he had a very tough style to figure out and get in a rhythm... I think he makes Joe fight all night as hard as he can in a very ugly fight.

I agree. I think Johnson and any other pressure fighter with a similiar style like Pavlik and Daruiz would of given Calzaghe hell.

Johnson became a much better fighter when he hooked up with his longtime trainer Qawi at lhw. At smw he was nothing special but he was a top fighter at lhw
-Rated highly by the Ring during his time at lhw
    -Ring fighter of 2004
    - wins over Jones and Tarver

    Hows it going KO?

I think Joe has a much better chance at beating a 168 Toney and Prime Hopkins, than Ruiz and Tarver the way Jones did it.. I may pick Joe at 100% to beat Tarver, but I doubt he would be after the dramatic weight changes, in his 30s over a short time period.

It doesn't matter who Glen lost to... Boxing is a game of styles, and Glen at his best had the style ,work rate, size and strength to possibly pose Joe many problems... If you are gonna say that, you might as well have counted Glen out against Jones and Tarver as well.

I'm good thanks mate, how are you?

I agree with you completely, Joe couldn't beat Ruiz, let alone then dropping down and beating Tarver, he wouldn't win all three in a trilogy with Tarver either. On his best night, in a one off fight, I think he's capable of beating them all. However, jones beat a lot of top ranked fighters over a long period of time, Joe would pick up losses on the way, with off nights and different styles. Jones had very good longevity, reigning from '93-04 as champion.

Interesting one about Johnson, that would be a close fight. I pick Joe to win an 8-4 type decision, his speed, workrate and skills would take over and joe's ability to adapt would see him get the decision

    Hi guys, great debate!

It's got me thinking about a few fights. (off topic)

    Toney vs Hopkins

    Toney vs Tarver

    Toney vs Glen

Obviously each fighter is at their best.

What do you think would of happened?

I'm having a hard time deciding. Apologies if this has been discussed before.

    Many thanks, Loudon.
