Could Julian Jackson have come close to denting Hagler's whiskers?

Chuvalo never had excellent defense or much of a survival mode to speak about. Keeping your hands up while taking a battering doesn't count for excellent defense, all it speaks of is that he had enough sense to do what most boxers without exceptional skill, speed or reflexes are advised to do.

If not for an abnormal ability to take a punch, he would surely have been flattened here:

Muhammad Ali wasn't really a scary puncher to stand before.
And taking risks against Ali wasn't as scary as doing it against George.

1:10 onwards, after the first hit, big George doesn't really hit him clean anymore.
Yes he hits him high on the head, but punches have much less KO power there than on the chin, his jaw was very well protected.

Also Ali had very quick hands, it's better to look at his defence with guys who punch as fast as most heavyweights, and not a fast guy like Ali.

For the record Chuvalo himself said he wasn't hit with nearly as many punches as people thought. I think.

He may have said it but LaMotta is more famous for it. His defensive skill is more noteworthy than Chuvalo's in my estimation, for a man perhaps best known for absorbing punishment.

2:40 onwards, but you don't have to skip the rest.
first 2:40 he explains why he thinks his chin is good.

"if I got hit with 1/10 of the punches people give me credit for I would be "weepebebepebepe""

Only if Jackson could land enough times. I can only see him doing that to post-Hearns Hagler. Otherwise, forget it.

Good clip...what a lucid, intelligent, healthy guy Chuvalo is, seems like a real gent.

Most videos i've seen Lamotta talking about it he says he had very good reflexes and was quick enough to roll with punches which took alot of steam of them.

No, at best, Julian would slightly stun Marvin.Same thing would happen if he fought Davey Moore, Moore would be slightly stunned, then move on to flatten Julian.

I think pretty much anyone can be hurt with that kind of Power. That's not to say it would happen, but the possibility will always be there.

Jackson had the power and delivery to flatten Hagler. Saying otherwise is ridiculous. However, I wouldn't have bet on him doing it.

Because even top fighters are going to be hit one day, and a top chin can keep them in a fight, and still able to win the fight. Also mere mortals like ourselves must look at these guys as extremely tough men and if you can take power from huge punchers than you have some genetic make up that makes you above the average human being. Especially as knockouts can happen to anyone anywhere anytime, It makes you think of Haglers determination - he seems pratically superhuman to people that havent boxed, or ham n eggers like me who have boxed and have been hurt. :yep Also a good chin can mean many things, sharpness, strength, determination, defence. But most of all concerntration! 45mins of concerntration, if you switch off for a second, the fight could end with you seeing stars.

Also, remember Jackson could not dent McCallum's chin at 154 lbs. I doubt he'd dent Hagler's at 160 lbs.

    Yes.

Hagler was the greatest MW of all time amd the greatest chin at the weight, but Julian held the title of the hardest puncher at that weight.

Hearns had Marvin stunned. At MW, Julian is a harder puncher than Hearns.

People underestimate how easy it is to get knocked out.

    Julian could do it.

Of course he could do it if he hit him enough .. Hagler was human after all .. Hearns stung him a bit but busted his hand in the process ..

As far as Chuvalo goes, as tough as he was , the Foreman fight was stopped to save his life. I've watch the tapes many times .. no one could keep taking those shots.
