This isn't the 90's anymore, so he can beat the #1 HW. But he could pull a RJJ and pick a weak one once the belts are shattered post Klitschko era.
Not more likely than Kathy Duva winning a HW title. Then again if WBA outsources their belt production to China and increases its output from 6 belts per division to 100, anything can happen.
How do you know that? Have you ever seen Povetkin at LHW? We have no idea who well Kovalevs power and chin will do at 210-220 lbs.
Chris Byrd got a Heavyweight Title ... and he was a middleweight and super welterweight as amateur. Roy Jones got a title, too. Spinks gone from 175 to 200lb and dethroned Larry Holmes Kovalev would be a smaller heavyweight than Tomasz Adamek or Chris Byrd. But with a bit luck, he could capture a HW title. But it would be very difficult against a 230lb-or-more-guy (Klitschko, Fury, Pulev etc.)
Kovalev is a small light heavyweight. He should stick to175. A lot of good fights could be made there.
Byrd is underrated, had exteremly high ring IQ, Kolaev doesn't. Kovalev can't win a heavyweight title.
He woulda beat the Byrd that Wlad beat when he became champ. Unknown 175 pounder Shaun George battered Byrd not long after ffs. Hell , even Cleverly would have beaten that Byrd.
There was no beating That pushed him into the gorge No Wlad jabs, hooks, or right hands he'd been eating Before he faced Mr. George
