With Ortiz, I don't think it's just that his engine is bad, but also he has a pretty energic offensive style, and it's a pretty bad combination.

there weren't any 240 pound southpaws with the amateur pedigree of Ortiz in the 80s. Who knows how anybody would have done with him? Page, Tubbs, or Dokes MIGHT have faced a southpaw or two as amateurs, we know that Larry Holmes was knocked out twice by 5-10, 200 pound, southpaw Nick Wells as an amateur. Wells didn't have the size, international experience, or ability of Ortiz. Until a fighter faces a southpaw we have no idea how he would perform against one. Then throw in Ortiz' size and experience...

Holy was much better by the second Bowe fight before that all his fights at heavyweight were less than stellar, I think Ortiz would have got hit less than Holly did by the likes of Dokes and Alex Stewart.

Witherspoon and Tubbs were in worse condition than Ortiz is now when they fought each other and Witherspoon was clearly effected by his conditioning v Bruno when he got hit far more than Ortiz would have v Frank.

I think Wilder`s looking for anything to excuse him not being able to knock Fury out.

Might be Holmes’ best win too. He’s a big southpaw with skills, smarts, and power. He’s getting on in years now but I don’t see how he’s not in the same class as the best men Holmes fought (and the guys Holmes “missed” too).

Well tin hat on but is Ortiz really that good? I realise he had a great amateur pedigree but as a pro what really has he achieved?
    What is his greatest win?
The best I've seen him fight was in the losing effort against Wider.

Are you going to argue that Wilder is not a big dude? Are you going to argue that Marciano was a big dude?

Sorry Philly, after re-reading your post, you and I are basically on the same page. I was just saying that no matter what era you are in, it is always puzzling and disappointing when skilled fighters like Ortiz, Tubbs, Page, etc show up to the biggest fight (and likely biggest moment) of their lives in poor condition and sabotage any realistic chance of becoming a champion.

Yes he looked terrible against the likes of Dokes and Buster Douglas.

Truth be told he fought quite ok against wily veterans in Holmes and Foreman too. Both were difficult opponents and never looked like winning.
