Could Larry Holmes realistically beat Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott in the same night

Not ones trying to trash or low rate them. Actually I think highly of them and I think it would be unrealistic to think Holmes beats both in the same night. Could he beat Snipes and Berbick in the same night back to back?

While I favor Holmes over them individually, it's principally because of his size advantage. But in my short list of sub 200 pound fighters who would most likely upset Holmes, Charles and Walcott are at the top. Right above HW Roy Jones and Floyd Patterson.

BTW, in Ring Magazines top 50 greatest fights of all time that never happened, Walcott vs Holmes was on the list.

And I don't think it's too far fetched to think Walcott and Charles could have beaten all of the contenders Holmes defended the title against. The only sub 200 pound fighters I give a better chance to possibly beat prime Holmes is Marciano and Dempsey due to styles and punching power.

But I'd give Walcott and Charles a better chance of beating say a prime Foreman or Liston than I would Marciano or Dempsey again due to styles. And while I pick Marciano or Dempsey to beat some of the lesser punchers, like Lyle, Chuvalo, Bonavena or Mac Foster, I think Walcott and Charles would have an easier time with them than Marciano or Dempsey

I heard somewhere that Jeffries offered to fight his top 5 contenders in one night once, and they declined, but that almost has to be apocryphal. That really sounds like legend.

Not to pick nits, but it seems to met me it would be less misleading to say Holmes has more of a reach advantage over Walcott than a size advantage.
I mean, does anyone doubt Walcott hits harder?

Walcott might have hit harder certainly, but he was 6' 194-196 lbs while Holmes was 6'3 209-215 lbs so although it's not a massive size difference it is still one there. But there was a larger size difference between Holyfield and Bowe than there would be between Holmes and Walcott

Yeah, and I neglected to mention Holmes was probably stronger and better in the clinch. (Funny how loosely that seems to overlap with punching power.)

This is probably the closest that any fighter actually came to doing it.

Jeffries was scheduled to fight two men, who were essentially fringe contenders in the same night, and the second fight didn't come off.

Man. What happened to this forum? Are they all children? First MARCIANO doesn't have a chance against Cooney Bruno or Tubbs then Louis is losing to these jokers and now Holmes, a legitimate great beats 2 other greats on 1 night and the two other greats are compared to the Montreal 5 of the Foreman fiasco. Size is Everythi ng to these guys. Maybe it is time to look elsewhere for older fans.

I couldn't agree more Morlocks! :beer-toast1:....Ezz and Jersey Joe are being confused somehow with Joe King Roman and Jean Pierre Coopmans.

"Lesser punchers" like the ones who decked Foreman and Frazier respectively?

Seems extremely unlikely that any fighter could pull something like that off but who knows? Tyson would have a much better chance than Holmes, FWIW.

Yes, but not one of them was near World Class. Which is what we are looking for here.
I wonder if Sullivan, when he was "liking any man in the house", beat up multiple guys at a time?

I really don't think he should realistically be favored to beat any two lineal champs in one night. Not even Briggs and Rahman, let alone a pair such as Charles and Walcott.
