I say no. Hagler was much faster and more accurate in his prime. It's obvious watching the fight that Hagler lost a lot of his speed from age. I just think he wasn't as sharp. Of course Leonard is going to be better himself, but I think hagler would win if he's in his prime. Today I watched it on DVD and I had hagler ahead 1 point. a prime hagler wouldve won it by a larger margin in my opinion. Also why didn't they have a rematch? It was a very close fight, and in my opinion kind of controversial that Leonard won.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiPhhzRJMSM&feature=youtube_gdata_player[/ame] Im talking about this hagler. This guy had perfect movement and a hell of a jab. I dont think Leonard could handle this hagler.
Hagler is one of my fav boxers but with no bias I'll just say that Leonard wouldn't have beaten him. Leonard even admitted that Hagler was in a declining stage so he saw he could beat him.
Prime Hagler had one or two close fights against less men than Leonard. I would favour prime Hagler, since they are very close on skill and Marv has the size advantage, but such a great fighter as Leonard is always going to be in with a shout. Although if he tries to fight like in Duran I, he will get ****ing battered.
Which Leonard are we talking about....the welterweight or Superwelter Leonard? Obviously MW Leonard is not as good as prime Hagler.
Although hagler wasnt in his prime when they met, neither was leonard. Prime 4 Prime, i have to side with the Marvelous one, but he doesnt have it all his own way.
i want to agree but i just can't see how leonard, at any weight he came in at, is terribly competitive. before duranimal comes in and tears this thread a new *******, leonard never proved he could compete with bigger fighters. i never saw him beat someone who was physically that much stronger, hit that much harder and wouldn't blink at his shots
No, but helluva fight while it lasted, which would massively overshadow the fight that eventually did take place. Previously I thought Leonard might last the distance, even in a 15 round fight, but now I think a Leonard, close to his peak, would be too adventurous for his own good and wouldn't fight quite as defensively as in the '87 fight. I see Hagler stopping him in a great one.
Point taken. I just think that Leonard was an exceptional talent (as too was Marvin) and that in his prime would be capable of giving anyone an argument, within reason of course. I still take Hagler to win, just not as easily as some might think and SRR will have his moments.
