Got to say that I watched the fight live on closed circuit and the feeling was that Leonard had won it comfortably. It seemed that everyone in the theatre was behind Leonard and as McIlvanney said he did create an illusion.
All scorecards, scored rounds 1 and 2 for Ray Leonard. Rounds in which Marvin Hagler made no effort to score. It looked like Hagler had a thought, that as soon as I hit this guy, he's going down. So let me carry him a bit.
I think he would. Never have I seen such hatred towards a fighter for winning a fight. The animosity toward Leonard is probably the most bizarre aspect on this forum, because it's not only harboured by trolls but also by otherwise good posters. And stating that he actually achieved just what it looks he achieved is enough to labelled a fan boy. I mean, when it comes to Liston-Ali there was at least some undeniably strangeness in both of them, and Norton has an argument for winning all three against Ali. Even if it often gets overstated there is at least something at the core of these things. But the length one has to go to in order to discredit Leonard's victory of Hagler...
Marvin Hagler vs. Ray Leonard Judges Scorecards: Dave Moretti,,,,,,,L L L L,,,H L H H,,,H L H L = 7-5-0 (Leonard) Lou Filippo,,,,,,,,,,L L H H,,,H L H H,,,H H L L = 7-5-0 (Hagler) Juan Guerra,,,,,,,,L L L L,,,,H L L L,,,,L L L H = 10-2-0 (Leonard) * The only other Championship Fight that Juan Guerra judged, was Carlos DeLeon vs. Marvin Camel (WBC Cruiserweight Title Fight)

When I say that I scored the fight for Hagler, I don't mean to discredit Leonard's win. It just shows that it was a close fight and basically comes down to if you score more in favor of flashy flurries or harder, more concentrated blows. What Leonard did was amazing, but it also needs to be said that neither Hagler nor Leonard was at their best, and it showed. Leonard was clearly on the verge of being in some trouble towards the end and imo would have lost a clear decision had the fight been 15 rounds. Hagler seemed even more sluggish than he did in the Mugabi fight and gave the first few rounds away. Not Leonard's fault that Marvin fought a lackadiscal fight, he capitalized on it by being more flashy, which is smart and more than likely it is what swung the judges to score the fight for him instead of Hagler.
It is because you guys in 'the battered wives club' go to great lengths to proclaim that your idol would win all fantisay match ups and some one dare have one of the best MW's (Marvin) beating one of the best (WW's) in Leonard, is that not makes Durans win over Leonard the best win ever? as a great littler man should not beat a great bigger man? You guys say that Leonard was green for his first bout with Duran but was prime for their 2nd bout? how can that be? If an inch is given to you guys you will want a yard and he will only ever lose in a fantsay match up to SRR.
The thing Hagler is not given credit for is the level of opposition for his last 3 fights; prime Hearns/prime Mugabi/and then Leonard. How many are going 3-0 against those guys? Most guys don't fight that level of competition their whole careers and this guy did it in consecutive bouts. The wear and tear factor alone is huge.
