He looked hurt, to be sure. But do you think he could have made the effort to get up and continue? Or was he really out cold?

He was out. That was about as conclusive a KO as you are going to see. Besides, the old adage is when they land on their face they dont get up and he sure landed on his face.

I was never quite sold on it. He stayed down against Ali, and I was somewhat reminded of that knockdown here.

It's chilling to see one of the best killers in the ring laying there getting revived after the 10 count.

Damn. And he was winning right before he got struck. Do any of you think he had a remote chance of winning the title again? I don't see him beating a peak Frazier at this time in his career. He'd probably lose to Foreman and the comebacking Ali as well.

He was about 45 years old, and not in the best shape.
He did well against Martin up until the last round and a half before the knockout. He didn't have the stamina, and Martin fought back well.

The post-fight interview is a bit sad. Sonny will carry on fighting for money because he has no other legit way of earning a living. He's never going to be enthusiastic about it. Liston's time had passed, and he knew it. Another title shot was more unlikely than ever.

No. Martin was hurting in round 9 back in '69, but he clocked Liston with a solid shot on the chops..... Liston was out..... All for real....... No 1965 Maine / Ali **** there..... NO! All legit......

The big thing with that fight is how it unraveled. Kind of like Curry/McCallum.

It was all going 1 way and everything was going according to script. but then the opponent didn't oblige and landed something that caused physical damage. And it was Liston {Curry} doing the suffering. And it just looked to me that the wall was going to fall in the guy. Just a strange feeling and sense that it was time for a role reversal and the guy landing everything was simply not going to absorb one tenth of what the opponent had. Sonny just did not look good with that bloody nose. And what about Curry and that swollen eye? Remember Leonard commenting about the resiliency of McCallum?

Every now and then we get fights like this--Tyson is another. And the ending just comes so very very quick once they are the guy having to absorb and are being asked to weather a storm. For some reason, they just cannot weather that storm and you can see it just a little bit prior to the ko.

Hell no...are you serious? Three deadly shots were landed by Martin that would have ko'ed anybody...I was watching that fight live and I reacted to that ko as one who was watching a car hit a pedestrian...you just knew Liston was dead to the world. Martin's combo was like a perfect storm in a way...never have I seen a more lethal combination thrown..even by Joe Louis...I remarked to my dad that Liston resembled a bear skin rug on the floor for all intents and purposes...like an inanimate object laying there. He was OUT cold.

This is the knockout I was reminded of when Mike Weaver sent Big John Tate out to the world. Like Cosell in Vegas, Keith Jackson in Knoxville knew it was over as soon as the winner connected, at the outset of the plunge to Earth. (If Howard had been the announcer in Knoxville that night, I suspect there's a strong possibility he would have brought up Martin-Liston.)

It can be assumed safely in retrospect, lol, that Liston was capable of losing by a legitimite ko...8-9-10..OUT...and not always of the bogus Ali kind of thing as in Miami and Lewiston. Never was a guy more conclusively knocked flat out.

Do any of you think Sonny would have taken those punches better during his prime, or was it the effect of his punches/his age that did him in?
