Replace liston With Ron Lyle, challenging Floyd Patterson? Who s your money on? Is Patterson caught fast and kod or is there a different scenario with Floyd winning?
I'm pretty sick of saying it, but Lyle has I think one knockout of note. He didn't knock out good fighters, as a rule. I think he's probably made more in terms of rep off one fight (Foreman) than any fighter to have lived outside of Buster Douglas.
Yes I can understand that. He's a dangerous guy but his record s not showing a boat load of top notch kos. Saying that, he's just about rugged enough to at least put Floyd down. Whenever he keeps him down, I've not decided yet.
Floyd was the better fighter no doubt s. Thing is, he was a better fighter than a certain Swedish guy and well.. You know the rest..
This is a tough one. I did vote for Lyle, but not in great faith. Patterson was a very vulnerable guy for such a great fighter, whereas Lyle just didn't have near as many great wins over proven contenders like Floyd did. I think Patterson is capable of outboxing Lyle, but he wouldn't be able to knock him out. I think that Lyle is bad for Floyd's style and could bomb him out fast. Of course, Lyle could start slow, so Lyle might stop him in the middle rounds.
It would have been good to see Patterson fight a "lesser big puncher" in Cleveland Williams. It would have given us a better clue on how Patterson would have fared against the Shavers and Lyles of the world. Although, he did beat guys like Chuvalo and Bonavena who were strong and could crack.
I'm not suggesting that Patterson couldn't beat Lyle, but when did Floyd ever stop someone with Lyle's kind of power?
I asked you first, but of course naturally Shavers is the only big name he stopped. But just cuz that was the only one doesn't mean anything. Watch his fights with Foreman and Quarry as well, it's quite clear that he's a powerhouse.
