Traditionally, the answer is yes. But that's assuming that the cruiser's are weighing 176-199 pounds come fight night.

However, against this larger strain of "heavyweight sized" cruiser weight boxers, could they still be expected to win a title?

Well if the Cruisers of the last 10-20 yrs could actually fight on the level of a prime Spinks or Patterson than maybe we could have a discussion about it. But fighters like Usyk , Gasve, Bellow, Ramirez, and others just don't pass the eye test and or lucky to be boxing in this extremely untalented era of boxing. A fighter as well rounded but awkward as Spinks or with the hand speed , power and skill level of Patterson would have a field day with what's been at the championship level at cruiser the last 10-20yrs.

I asked because quite a few expect Gassiev or Usyk to have been competitive with a prime Joe Louis. So it stands to reason that they could have been competitive with or even beat Patterson and Spinks.

No they wouldn't have been able to compete with J.Louis. They wouldn't have the massive size advantage of a Wilder or a Joshua and that would be the only advantages those two would have. Anyone of today's fighters that close in size to prime Louis would be destroyed. That simple to me. The level of fighting and the skills past fighters had is just on a different level than what's seen in today's boxing.. Perhaps because of the fact the dangers of boxing are much more at the fore front of the sport now . The training and especially the sparring is much lighter than it used to be. Also trainers today don't seem to find what the fighter does best. We don't see the super slick fighters like Pep,Whitaker, or Davis jr. We don't see the viscous power punchers like a Shavers, J.Jackson, Mugabi, or Foreman. The great brawlers like H.Armstrong or an A.Pryor or J.Frazier. Everyone today seems to fight typically the same way with slight deviations of aggressiveness and southpaw and orthodox stance. Poor technique is so prevalent its sad. Just watch Wilder or Joshua when their tired, all technique goes out the window. (Esp Wilder) And those two are the heavy champs of the world.

You don't think that guys like Pacquiao, Mayweather, Usyk, Loma, Rigo, Inoue, Ward, etc. would be able to cut it in the old days?

I think today's Cruiser division is a shark tank and that even these greats would have their work cut out for them.

    *Could* they win titles? Yes.

*Would* they win titles? That's a lot less certain. There's a lot of guys at cruiser right now that I think *could* beat either of them.

Gassiev competitive with Louis??? LOL the guy squares up and doesn't move his head Louis would first jab him half to death and then light him up like a Christmas tree.

Any man who could beat Larry Holmes at HW, even if Holmes was in decline a bit, is capable of winning the CW title.

They could, but would find themselves tested more, depending on the era. Usyk, for instance, would be a top heavyweight in the 40s. But would he beat men like Louis, Charles or Walcott? Mayweather would be a top welterweight then, but he'd run up against the likes of Robinson, Gavilan and company.

I think either Patterson or Spinks would beat Usyk more often than not (although not every time), and I like Usyk.

The funny thing is that those guys would be SMALL Cruiserweights today. Patterson beat guys like Folley and Bonavena who were better than Gassiev and Bredis. Not better by a little either.

Usyk is obviously the standout but any of the top guys are good enough to win on the night. You know the list.
