Could Manny Pacqauio have beaten Miguel Cotto at Jr. Middleweight

Yes BUT Cotto would take Pacquaio's punches a bit easier, hurt him more and push him back more. That's because he's physically stronger at 154 where as Pac would not gain anything from fighting at 154

Pacquaio still wins but Cotto does better

 

The question was 'could Pacquiao have beaten Cotto at JMW' and my answer was based on the fact that Pacquaio has never fought at 154lb, there's a big difference between fighting Cotto at 145lb (the lowest weight Cotto has fought at since he beat Malignaggi at JWW in 2006) and a 154lb Cotto. I said it from the start that these silly catchweights team Pac always wants would come back to haunt them.

 

Yes he could beat Cotto at 154 and we can find out if these guys agree to fight again at that weight. Cotto still has options after his loss to Mayweather.

 

Pacquiao would beat Cotto at 154. He'd let Cotto weight whatever he wanted, weigh in at 144-147 himself and the result would be similar. Either a late round TKO or wide decision win. Either way, he'd inflict similar punishment he did to him at 145.

It's all about styles really. Just because May had slightly more trouble with him, we have to acknowledge that it is a matter of styles and just because Manny can destroy Cotto, doesn't necessarily mean Mayweather will do the same. It's funny that I'm saying this, given that I scored it 10-2 for May, any other fighter who wins a decision 10-2 you'd invariably label as a dominant win. Fact is, it WAS a dominant win for Mayweather, its only because he didn't win every single round as easily as he does against other fighters that were discussing this.

Ultimately, we look to draw inferences on a potential May/Pac fight from the May/Cotto fight and its near impossible. Stylistically, Cotto and Pac are completely different thus rendering any inferences nearly redundant.

 

why would a 147 operator who cant even make the 147 limit fight at 154? weight class are there for a reason. those that would ask pac to go at 154 are the biggest ******* on these board.

 

Feasibly, but that would have been a big risk health-wise. I think since the damage of the Margarito fight, Team Pacquiao is focused on fighting nowhere above welterweight.

 

Only way cotto win vs pac his by putting him down ko with the same shot that busted him the first time. And a 165 pound hook hurts more.

Still Pacquiao beat him at a size and weight disadvantage very one-sided and deserves lots of credit for that win. Not the title though........

As far as "Well Manny doesn't make..." I don't wanna hear it. Floyd was 149 against Oscar and still beat him at an actual weight class for an actual title. I admit a Pacquiao-Cotto rematch at 154 is intriguing to me now because of how well Cotto has done at the weight.

 

Pac was too scared to face Cotto at 147 after his brutal streak of wars. Clearly, his team thought he couldn't beat that 147 Cotto. In what world can he then beat the man at 154 or even 150?

At 154 in 10oz gloves, Cotto's chances are better. His gameplan would be better than it was the first time too. Manny is not walking through this Cotto. But, he's likely to get a decision victory.

Cotto at 154 is bigger sturdier and better conditioned

If Manny fought him like Floyd did and had it at 154 allowing Cotto to gain as much weight as possible Pac would have one hell of an obstacle

Cotto had success vs Floyd but really it was styles make fights, Cotto had a good strategy and style on how to beat a one shot at a time pot shotter who looks to counter

this strategy would not work on a guy like Manny who would just come at him and fire combinations and try to back Cotto up

i think Cotto post Margo 2 has gained back an edge and his corner is way better than the Pac fight and his state of mind may be better

any way Manny still wins maybe not the devastating fashion of fight one but he most certainly wins again

only 1 way to find out i guess

 

I honestly believe Cotto would stop Pacquiao at 154. He managed a few good rounds with nobody in his corner. With Diaz there now and his disciplined training camp, I can see Miguel outboxing Manny and catching him with some great body shots and left hooks. Even in his deteriorated state, he busted the right side of Pac's face.
