Marciano was of the stock of the ancient Roman Soldier Warrior, He knew how to change speed & angles & like a spider make his opponent reach into his web of awakwardness & if it was a fight of attrition he worked & pounded whatever he could hit. He may not have all the size but he had tremendous strength, stamina, brains & heart & he was Charley Goldmans masterpiece.

A lot of white guys dont like Europeon stock from different regions than their own ancestory, even some of the same nation dislike others from a different region. Friends of mine from different parts of the old Soviet Union only root for the fighters from their town. A lot of fair minded Brown & tan guys like Ali & Joe Louis, Frazier,Walcott & Tyson reconize greatness & all rate Marciano very highly but these guys were great fighters & reconize greatness not color

Right now I like the development & stock of Anthony Joshua, he got off the floor against Klitschko & Wlad let him come back & to his credit he rallied but Povetkin is still dangerous & the winner of Wilder vs Ortiz is a live opponent. I am curious to see how Tyson Fury comes back & there are a few guys I like from the amateurs that can be a force & we have some great talent in the 200lb division that will eventually move up to challenge like Usyk & Gassiev & a few others. I am excited with the heavyweights right now things are cooking up.

Never thought I'd see the day where people who fancy themselves serious boxing fans argued that being white was a hindrance to Rocky Marciano's legacy. Unreal.

Then again, before becoming active in this forum, I never thought I'd see people argue that Marciano was fast, had excellent balance, was defensively superb, and lacked any technical flaws or limitations either.

I would say that overall, being white might help his legacy in the sense that he is more remembered.
But it seems to make his ranking lower for boxing heads.

I just honestly don't see it. With all due respect, I think it probably only seems that way to you because you don't really accept any of the limitations and shortcomings that most of us see in him. I think that people would make the same caveats and criticisms about his size, style, lack of refinement, short reign, and old/small opponents if he were nonwhite too. It's just hard for me to imagine that more people would give him a chance against Ali or Foreman or Tyson if he were black.

    Not at all.
It's the impression I gather after having read over 6,000 comments left on my Marciano video.

Well, it's lucky Marciano never fought Louis! Louis would have cleaned him up FAST! ;)

You carry a portrait of Dempsey around with you in a golden heart-shaped locket. I'm not sure that you're exactly the typical boxing fan ;)

Who is a typical boxing fan?
I would have thought someone who has followed the sport for nearly 60 years, has a pretty extensive film and book library , amassed over the last 50 years, has been to over 50 live fights, and watches boxing every week,[Groves/Eubank this past Saturday]has written his own amateurish analysis of fights in some obscure magazines, might qualify as a typical fan but what would I know?
ps Where can I obtain that locket?

No the Brown Bomber never fought Marciano.
As John Roxborough said to Al Weill when Weill was crowing after the fight ," my boy beat the great Joe Louis!"
" No he didn't, he beat a man named Joe Louis."

It cuts both ways. It helped his fame and his exposure. He gets rated too high on heavyweight lists probably, partially due to being white. I think that along with the undefeated record springs a resentment from many boxing fans. I think the 49-0 is really at the crux of it. We didn`t see him lose some fans take that too far and have him in their mind as unbeatable. More resentment comes with that from fans who look at it more logically.

Bottom line Larry Holmes comments still hang in the air. Don`t kid yourself there is a resentment.

Marciano has a stylistic advantage, but I don' think he would be able to knock him out like Tyson did, which means this would be going to points, which means Larry win. If shavers overhand wasn' enough to knock Holmes out rockys wouldn' either, but he would probably land more often than shavers and not get hit as much

Then you might as well be arguing that black is white.

You never gave me a satisfactory answer as to why ,and I honestly believe,Im more up to speed on styles and how they interact than you are.Nothing personal, but if you think Marciano has an advantage over Holmes here, you should be sectioned.
