I don’t see the point of getting into the weeds of the level of his competition. For one, he’s still actively on the rise. And two, he has done more than enough to prove our point sufficiently.

“On one hand today’s competition is too big for smaller guys. But the smaller guy that keeps winning doesn’t count because today’s competition is sub par.”

Don’t see how this isn’t a complete contradiction.

 

In a nutshell. This is exactly what the situation is.

 

His level of competition is a huge factor. Tho not always his fault, he has almost exclusively plowed thru a line up of walking corpses. Liakhovich, Arreola and Stiverne2 were completely, dangerously shot fighters who were nothing but names. Szpilka and Washington were wash-outs as fighters. That doesn't leave a lot of meat on the bone. Ortiz was a nice win, tho. Let's see what happens next.

Success in one era doesn't translate into success in another era. There are plenty of greats who would be crushed by contenders and even journeymen types of later eras so Marciano is hardly unique in that regard.

He weighed almost exactly as much as Joe Louis did, when Rocky Marciano fought him, and at 6' 7'' he was spreading it a lot thinner.
