Those guys all lost at the wrong moment. Henry was outclassed by Archie Moore, that blew his shot. Baker was poleaxed by Satterfeild and beaten by Moore also. All during the time Rocky was champ.

Earl walls? We saw film of him he looked like a complete phoney. During Marcianos reign Walls was beaten by Tommy Harrison and some oaf called Edgardo Romano..with home advantage both times. then Earl walls drew with the woeful James J Parker.

Walls was right up there with Lamar Clark. Walls was exposed in London by Ham and egger Lloyd Barnett who decked Walls twice. How good was Barnett? Don Cokkell beat Barnett before and after the night Lloyd whipped Walls.

Russell Sullivan’s book on Marciano stated that the press campaigned for a Lastarza rematch. There was a lot of sympathy in the press toward Lastarza for the scoring of the first fight. There was resentment for the power Marcianos manager appeared to have had at that time. It was said Weil refused a rematch with Rocky because DeAngelo (Lastarza’s manager) slammed a door in Al weils face after the first fight. Lastarza was good copy. He was a clean cut kid who turned up to every Marciano fight with his manager to complain about why he was being ducked by Rocky. Rolands manager was seen as being something of a straight guy getting the shaft off the big guys. He was well regarded too.

Old foreman was not better than prime foreman in any sense. He was patient because he was an ancient and he had no alternative,if he was capable to do it at 42 then at 25 he could have done too if he had wanted but simply he was killer in his prime . just the idea of thinking that a fighter in his 42 could be better than he was at 25 is at least laughable.moorer, stewart, morrison and briggs would not last 5 rounds with a 74 foreman

    Walls beat
    Freddie Beshore
    Jimmy Slade
    Tommy Harrison ko
    Bill Gilliam
    Bernie Reynolds ko
    Rex Layne x2 both kos
    James J Parker
Remind me when Clark ever beat a contender?
Oh and Barnett beat the 21 years old version of Walls.
Slade beat Cockell and Walls beat Slade.Stop with the spin I'm worth more than that!
"Earl Walls also known to some as "The Windsor Walloper" was a smooth, intelligent boxer with a terrific punch in either hand. He made a name for himself with a 90-second knockout of top contender Rex Layne. In 1954 and 1955 there was talk of a match with Rocky Marciano for the world championship but Marciano's promoter was uninterested. Walls was the Canadian Heavyweight Champion when he retired to become a successful real estate agent in the late 1950s boom. Walls passed away while playing poker at a charity Casino in Toronto, December 13, 1996.

    • [The Deseret News] Sept 21, 1953 - A Las Vegas boxing syndicate headed by Herman Prujan offered Marciano $250,000 to meet Earl Walls in January of the next year".

This is funny because Everett Skehan's book doesn't mention any press campaign.

Why do you guys keep giving this one renewed life? The board can really do better than this.

LaStarza was the current #1 ranked Ring Magazine contender when Marciano gave him a title shot.

That is all the justification that was needed.

If LaStarza was #1 when the contract was signed, that would be good enough for me!

I would assume so, because he was coming off a win over Layne, and Valdez lost to Baker a month or so later.

It’s not who Walls beat. It is who Walls lost to during Marcianos reign. Earl walls simply was not any good. I recon Walls never lost to a heavyweight Don Cokkell could not beat.

Walls lost bad to Abel Cestac, 14-12 Alfred Gallagher, a novis called Edgardo Romano who had few fights to his name. Lloyd Barnett (who Don Cokkell spanked) in fact walls even lost to lightheavyweights like Tommy Harrison and Jimmy slade.

I have a fascinating tidbit for you, Earl Walls and Carmine Vingo both fought the same guy in their third fight who went on to become the future amateur coach of Riddick Bowe and Mark Breland. He was a guy called George Washington.

How did Walls fare against Washington? Earl Walls was annihilated in one round by Riddick Bowes amateur coach.

At exactly the same stage of his career Carmine Vingo (the Marciano victim) soundly thrashed Bowes amateur coach.

Seriously, was LaStarza's greatest win his first loss to Marciano?

I don't think the heavyweights of Marciano's era would be competitive in the 1990s onwards but they measure up fine with the 40s, 60s, and 70s. In the 1970s Leon Spinks became champion with only 7 pro fights. I take Cockell in the top 10 over Spinks becoming champion anyday.
