Also, it's hard to excuse Holmes fighting Rodriguez, Evangelista, Zanon, etc. I don't think these guys were even ranked in the top 10. Smith and Witherspoon were extremely inexperienced when Holmes faced them. I think they should have gained more experience before fighting Holmes.

One key difference is that Marciano beat guys who were clearly superior to any of the guys he didn't face like Moore, Charles, and Walcott. On the other hand Michael Dokes and Tony Tubbs are easily as good if not better than anyone Holmes faced especially given that Smith and Witherspoon had so few fights when he faced them and had probably not reached their peaks. Dokes, Thomas, or Tubbs might have been Holmes best win had the fights occured whereas beating Baker or Valdes is not so beneficial to Marciano's legacy.

Or maybe his split decision over a terminally diminished Layne?

Consider the guys he "somehow" never met.
    Baker
    Walls
    Henry
    Valdes
    Charles
    Walcott
    Moore
    Gardner
    Sys
    Jackson
    Harrison
    Nardico
    Slade
    Satterfield
    Holman
    Machen
    Pastrano
    Williams
    Bivins
    Neuhaus
    Dunlop
    Summerlin
    Oma
    Baksi
    Wallace
    Carter
    Louis

What you "recon" is irrelevant. Lastarza lost to 14-9-2 Rocky Jones during Rocky's reign, he still got a title shot 2 fights later !

They were no heavyweights, they were mostly 190lb Cruisers, some made 200. Leon Spinks of the Ali fights would be in the top ten of the 50s without any problems.

I would pick the Leon that beat Ali to beat.
    Mathews
    Cockell
    Lastarza
    Old Louis who Rocky beat

He was indeed good in his early years. Then when he stepped up in the division....

Leon Spinks was undisputed heavyweight champ in the 70s, your comeback is that he would crack top 10 in the 50s?

The heavyweights today are much, much bigger than the heavyweights of the 1970s. Some of them make big George look like a midget. If the small size of the 50s is a knock on the era than the comparatively tiny size of Ali, Foreman, Frazier, etc is surely a knock on the 70s.

Also the 50s had plenty of heavyweights over 200 pounds like Sonny Liston, Cleveland Williams, Mike DeJohn, and Bob Baker.

The weight difference between the 50s and the 70s is bigger than between the 70s and Klitschkos era.

In other words: Who do you see beating Walcott, Charles, Moore and old Louis as well? Which is about as high as you can go rating Marciano.....

The avarage weight of Marciano, his opponents and their opposition was 185 pounds! Guessing the variation of that mean, real trimmed 200lb+ fighters were not common!

Don Cokkell and Carmine Vingo beat guys Earl Walls lost to. In his 40th fight whilst still world rated Walls lost to 7-2 Edgardo Romano an imported can from South America.

14-9-2 Rocky Jones was always a better fighter than Edgardo Romano who never won another fight after beating Walls in his hometown.

In fact Lastarza was bothered by a cut in that fight with Rocky Jones but won an immediate rematch quite soundly.

You don’t think Rocky Jones was any good? Rocky Jones beat guys who Earl Walls lost to.

    I disagree.

I think all those guys beat Leon Spinks.

    Your incorrect regards to size
Anthony Joshua is 6'6 weighs 243-254
Adam Kownacki is 6'3 weighs 242-264
Christian Hammer is 6'2 weighs 242-264
Andy Ruiz Jr is 6'2 weighs 247-260
Dillian Whyte is 6'4 weighs 245-254
Dominic Breazeale is 6'7 weighs 250-263
Jarrell Miller is 6'4 weighs 272-296
Joseph Parker is 6'4 weighs 234-246
Luis Ortiz is 6'3 weighs 230-242
Alexander Povetkin is 6'2 weighs 223-232
    Deontay Wilder is 6'6 1/2 weighs 214-229
    Kubrat Pulev is 6'4 1/2 weighs 245-255.

In the current top 10 there are 4 guys over 6'4 (Joshua, Wilder, Breazeale, and Pulev)
In 1973 and 1974 nobody over 6'4 cracked the top 10 and as best I can tell only Larry Middleton and Joe Bugner were over 6'3.

Are you sure about that? Valuev was part of the Klitschko era.
