Hagler weighed 157.5lbs against Duran and he has weight 155lbs in other fights, so surley he could've lost 1 extra pound and made 154? Plus he was not weight drained against Duran
Could have yes, would have wanted to likely not, Hagler dominated his division, if it aint broke don't try to mend it. Realise lot of boxers now often go up weights or indeed down to get alphabet titles, but being king of the castle for 7 yrs in your division secures Haglers legacy for me. Hagler is quoted as saying he disagrees with proliferation of title holders in each weight division, he feels there should be one champion only per division.
When Hagler was in early 20’s he most likely could’ve made 154, but by his mid to late 20’s it would’ve been too much and definitely impossible by the time he was in his 30’s. In his prime Hagler’s best fighting weight was 157-159 lbs. Hagler like a lot of old school fighters tended to stay around 3-5 lbs within their weight limit, so Hagler year round rarely if ever went over 165 lbs. Kid Gavilan was like this, since year round he stayed in impeccable shape at around 150 lbs, so at all times he could easily make 147, but also fight at 160 if he wanted to. When you make your target weight while also being in amazing condition sometimes squeezing off just one or two more pounds can be a recipe for ruin.
Going there one time or 157 is one thing, but weighing in there consistently is another. He was a solid middleweight.
