Could Marvis Frazier have realistically been able to win a heavyweight title?

His goal after witnessing Thrilla in Manila was to bring the heavyweight crown back to the Frazier family; we didn't see that but he had a decent career with his only losses being to elite competition in the form of Holmes and Tyson. He also had notable wins over Tillis and Bonecrusher Smith before Smith took the WBA title.

If he continues his career from the late 80s throughout the 90s would there have been any point he had a chance in winning an alphabet title? The early 90s would have been the only time that was definitely impossible with the shark tank of Tyson/Douglas/Ruddock/Holyfield/Bowe/Lewis.

    I don’t think so.

Marvis certainly had the talent and potential to pick up a strap, but unfortunately Marvis was injury prone and also kept having complications with his fused neck that kept requiring corrective surgery every couple of years while he was active, so Marvis was on borrowed time even when he turned pro, so I don’t see him lasting past where he did in the 80’s and certainly don’t see Marvis making it to the 90’s.

Depending on who he fought I think he had as much chance as anyone else.

I think he would beat Page or Tubbs.

Minus boxing politics, he obviously could've. Bonecrusher won a belt and he beat Bonecrusher. He couldve beaten Bonecrusher for a belt.

Maybe, perhaps he gets one of the alphabet belts. But not sure how long for.

Hook him up with Shilstone instead of Michael Spinks. The unilateral advantage of modern training was available back then to the first person who reached for it. (Assuming you believe it's valuable enough to change the outcomes of fights.)

And then match him up correctly, as others have said.

Look at how guys like Briggs, Smith, Leon, and Charles Martin won their belts, the dubiousness and the perfect set of circumstances.

Now tell me Marvis couldn't pull something similar.

Alphabet titles are easy to grab depending on who you’re faced with. He had the ability

Exactly, paper belts are just about timing, careful match making, and style clashes. Any above average boxer can grab one, especially with 4 belts and "interim" titles being handed out like cereal box toys.

I think he could have won an alphabet title in the eighties if matched properly at the right time.

Yes he could, I would have liked to see him as a cruiserweight though, I think he could have achieved more there.

Yes I think he would have beaten a lot of those cruiser belt holders. A fight between Marvis and a 190lbs Holyfield might have been interesting

End the thread right here. Not only did Marvis beat Boncrusher but he actually beat him the same year he went on to win the title off Spoon.

The two elites he fought ended him in one round. You think a 190lb Holy would have had an issue with him?

Possibly. For one thing it would have been in a lighter division. For another a lesser experienced Evander. And Marvis had 10 fights when he fought Holmes.
