At Heavyweight he had a high probability of winning the belt... eventually... over an aged Holmes. Just like Spinks did, in reality.

But his father ruined it for him. Joe absolutely ruined Marvis. He wanted Marvis, a gifted pure-boxer, to be a swarmer like him, and rushed his boy into fights he obviously wasn't ready for. Horrible cornerman and horrible match-maker.

If Joe hadn;t gotten involved Marvis would have been an ATG, and probably a champion.

The Holmes title shot was definitely for the money, recall Holmes saying that as a primary reason.

It's a huge longshot, but if he kept his original style and eventually met up with Old Foreman, it could have made his father even more proud.

Yeah. Totally not out of the question. Even if he had to come out of retirement himself. He had the skills and athleticism, and he lived a clean life. But his dad made sure any potential he possessed was quickly squashed.
