...instead of retiring the first time, he cleaned out the welterweight division, beating over the last three years: Margarito (pre-Mosley) Cotto (pre-Margarito) Mosley (2008) Clottey Williams (pre-Quintana) Berto Pacquaio Then moved to 154 unified the titles there. If he spent from 2007 - 2010 doing all of that, where would you have ranked him all time?
No. even with that i don't see too many people rating him higher than some of the legends from the past. But with that said, people would have made made all kinds of excuses and came up with reasons to discredit the victories.
Sure greatest ever. However that is a big IF. It is hard to compare with other tag because aside from Bert sugar who was probably alive when the Marquis of queensberry rules were made, I don't see anybody actually seeing all those atg fight. But sadly, he can't do that anymore. He retired when he should be fighting. At the end of his career, it would be a bog question mark not having pacquiao in his resume, or on lesser degree cotto, margarito instead of baldomir,
I actually agree that Floyd could have been the best ever. He has the tools, skills and god given ablity to have trancended the sport itself by doing what no one else could have. I just don't think he wanted it bad enough....I think his focus on money over legacy hindered his ability to go to a higher level. Had Floyd focused on legacy the money would have been there...even more than it is now. He just wants to do things his own way which I don't mind at all......but "HIS WAY" for me makes little sense. He didn't have to be an ass hole with a big mouth who burnt bridges and worrying so much about his persona. Floyd tries so hard to live up to this "MONEY" character when he could have just been Floyd...the great boxer who fought the best in order to be the best. He's still an incredible athlete and boxer...one that I absolutely lvoe to watch in action. Floyds not the only one who wasted a lot of their talents making dumb decisions and he won't be the last.
IF Mayweather stepped to the plate and cleaned out the deepest division in boxing while its best competors were in their respective primes, he would rocket up my, and most every knowledgeable fan's all time list. Above Robinson, the Brown Bomber, etc... that's hard to say. But, he would easily go down as the best of his era and join the conversation.
