First of all, I want to make a point very clear, I'm a hardcore boxing fan for over 20 years now. Always saw the sport as the «Noble Art» witch makes it far from show wrestling, were what you see is always a set-up.

Last Saturday night in Vegas, we can assume, most of boxing fans were interested to see how young Ortiz would do against Mayweather. The guy is #1 or #2, depending on your side of the story, and had not been in the ring for 16 months. Still, he's a great attraction for everybody. Now, you have the network, the promotors, all the people that lives off boxing, I'm not gonna say it was a fixed scenario, but, if you need to generate interest in your sport, what better ways to do it then with your most known icon, Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather.

Maybe it's because of my marketing background, but, what damages were being done to the sport last Saturday night ? Appart from the fact that Cortez will be pushed out big events, everybody is talking about the fight. And when you see Ortiz not doing a thing when May chocked him at the weight-in, and when you have Cortez looking away and not respecting the rules for an intentionnal head butt, and when you see Ortiz trying to grab May and hug him after they touched gloves, and at the end, you see Ortiz with a huge smile and goes on to laugh about it all with Mayweather at the end. Plus, the Merchant scene and everything. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but in marketing, for an ad campaign to be a succes, the saying is: Talk about it in right, talk about it i wrong, but talk about it.

I will remain a huge boxing fan, and I'm not the conspiracy type, but, am I the only one to think the way I do? Tell me what you guys think about my theory.

It's very suspicious how cortez wasnt paying attention once he called time in. very, very convenient. then you have ortiz grinning like a mad man and Team Ortiz just as happy

no but ortiz was hyped up to be a hungry young lion only to turn up to be an inexperienced fighter who quickly lost his head.

PBF is a genius at self promotion and loves playing the heel or the villain, but this who scene is beyond size and scope of even money.

    Not the fight.

But his fight with Merchant looked a bit staged to me.

It's as big as boxing is or want's to be, it's at the networks and promotors level...

You seem like a sensible person, but think about it for a moment. Would the people involved – mainly the promoters and Mayweather himself – really go to such extreme lengths to put on a show like that? We’re talking about a genuine headbutt that could have caused serious damage, and a nasty sucker-punch t delivered at full force at an unexpecting target. Not to mention the acting that would have been needed with the frenzied antics of Cortez, annoyed interviewers, etc. It’s just not realistic.

It's got us talking, hasnt it? whereas if floyd beat ortiz's ass and put on a clinic, it'd be just another money show

I know it's a huge job to coordinate the whole thing, but it's all in the interest of boxing and the money it generates. From a marketing pov, it's a genius job. Just saying...

Yeah, it’s got us talking. I’m not denying that. But that should that alone be used as the main reason for thinking it was all staged? Of course not.

Yeah, I think with the way it’s turned out, it’s given a hell of a lot of exposure for boxing (for good or for worse). But still, to say the whole event was premeditated, is a bit of a stretch. Sure, GBP and Mayweather knew Ortiz had little to no shot, and that he was just a pawn for Mayweather to extend his reign as the number one cash-cow in the sport, but I doubt they would have resorted to the things you’re suggesting. Too much risk involve for something that isn't necessarily needed. His profile is big enough as it is.
