Maybe not great from a historical perspective but watch film of Schulz, Jirov, etc. and you will see very solid fighters. Sorry man, but just because a guy was great in one era does not mean he would be great in another. I have watched Baer plenty of times and don't see anything that special other than a hard right hand landing against guys that don't show much defense.
I just don't get the Max Baer love at all. You drop him into the 60's, 70's or 90's heavyweight divisions and he is not going to be very successful at all. Instead of believing what you read about him, watch some YouTube videos of him. He was good in his era but not even close to being anything truly special.
The likes of Lou Savarese was able to hold his own with the Foreman that beat Moorer. Is Lou Savarese miles better than Max Baer?
Why not? We have multiple examples of fighters from these eras losing to fighters from earlier eras. Like Cleveland Williams getting knocked out by Bob Satterfield. Is it your opinion that Max Baer couldn't crack the top 10 in the 1950s despte Rex Layne doing so?
I don't know but a 12w and 13 loss Willie Davis was. He beat Baer about a year after he lost to Louis. Foreman fought Saverese in his second to last fight. If you want to cherry pick performances go right ahead. Baer has some real stinkers in his record. Again, I'm not bashing Baer. He was good in his era.
Did I mention the 50's? I said the 60's 70's and 90's. Look, neither of us are going to convince the other so why do we just agree to disagree and move on. I based my opinion on watching both fighters and I think MM is a way more versatile fighter after doing so. If you can watch film of both and still come to the conclusion that Baer is more talented then I don't know what else there is to talk about.
I would have more faith in Moorer winning had he fought more top guys. Botha, Schultz, Cooper, etc lost whenever they tried stepping up in class.
He wasn't though. 250lb Foreman hit way way harder than a 210lb Baer. Baer doesn't have the same concussive 1 punch power as Tua or Foreman Moorer would be the second best offensive force Baer ever faced
Depends on what you mean by that, but give me Schmeling over him. Then Max faced a lot of good contenders throught his career, Moorer wouldn't be something unseen for him.
I think Foreman hit at least as hard in his comeback. Powers the last thing you lose and Foreman came in heavy on purpose. In order to push his opponents around and have more weight behind his punches Baer was 200-205 in his prime. Baer hit hard but not Foreman hard
Baer weighed: 223 lbs against Pat Comiskey 221.5 lbs against Tony Galento 220.75 lbs against Lou Nova Did he punch harder then than in his prime?
