Could Miguel Cotto have beaten Antonio Margarito WITHOUT targeting his damaged eye

Since the second fight was similar to the first and Margarito's wraps were clean then it's no stretch of the imagination to venture that he was also clean the first time.:deal

 

Agreed. And Cotto looked like he'd beat hit by a truck.

However since, Magarito barely marked anybody.

Yeah, Margarito was banging his chest. And Cotto walked back to corner, confident and collected.

when the doctors stopped the fight Cotto was on his feet, keeping loose, ready to go back to work.

No one is saying Margarito isn't tough but all he'd get for being tough in those last three rounds was more flush left hooks to that already damaged eye.

 

Prior to the rematch, Margarito only had TWO fights "since"; one vs the tough-as-nails Robert Garcia and then vs best P4P boxer at the time.

Not to difficult to figure out instead of jumping to agenda-fueled conclusions.:deal

 

Why not stop the fight sooner when Toney's eye was already broken plenty of rds before? Toney was starting to get the better of Cotto and marking him up thats why. I firmly believe the doc saved Cotto from taking another knee and saving Rico the humiliation. Been years since I watched the fight but I swear Toney was getting to Cotto the same exact rd as he did in the first fight. Even with the "post pac" damaged eye Toney showed he would have beaten Cotto.

 

Watch the fight again. Cotto still won the 9th round, though it was closer than the pasting that he issued to Margarito in the 8th. Margarito took his time coming out for the ninth after that frame. All the chest beating in the world doesn't change the fact that Cotto was having more success in the second half of the fight, and was far more successful at keeping Margo in ring center.

Plus, he was fighting in MSG and had the crowd to spur him on over the final three rounds even if he decided, or was forced, to take his foot off the pedal.

Cotto was in a far better position to win this fight than the last one.

 

What Cotto boxing his ears and landing punches at will.

 

Margarito beats Cotto 10 times out of 10. Margarito is too tough for Cotto. The difference in the second fight was Margarito’s eye, and even in that fight Margarito was starting to take over at the end.

 

Cotto fans like to convince themselves that Margarito definitely had his gloves loaded to help them sleep better.

Margarito beat the Hell outta Cotto in that first fight... simply because he was too strong.

 

No he couldn't have, but he took advantage of
what was there, fair play to him.

One question regarding the Doc stopping the Marg-Pinky Cotto fight. Was that the same doc thaqt insisted Margarito break training & fly clear across country so he could " Examins Marg's eys to see if he was fit to fight" ??

Totally different fight already by the 5th round in the first fight Cotto was marking so bad and a lost of a lot of gas. In the 2nd fight Cotto had one of his best rounds on the round before.
