Could Muhammad Ali ever have beaten Henry Cooper in a true way?

Obviously, opening a cut on your opponent's face and then targeting said cut until the ref or doctor decides it's too bad to continue is NOT a true way to win a fight. This goes without saying (although I just said it, so perhaps it doesn't).

Now, as you may or may not know, both of Muhammad Ali's 'wins' over Sir Henry Cooper came via cuts. Thankfully, despite what the 'rules' say, no one in their right mind recognises these results as a true reflection of those fights. Common sense has prevailed and history states that Cooper EVT Ali (x2).

But what I want to know is this: Was Ali actually good enough to beat Cooper TRULY? Could he punch him in the face repetitively without opening a cut and actually win the fight by KO or on the scorecards?

Personally i'm not so sure. What about you?

And please, lets not have any of you pathetic 'Ali TKO Cooper' trolls in here. This is a serious thread for real fans. If you want to troll go do it in one of Boxed Ears' threads :good

No, he couldnt, Ali depended on his jab and straight punches, cos he couldnt punch to the body for ****.

Maybe with a little training with the greatest body puncher in livning memory, the true Body snatcher, Ricky Hatton, who took out world champions like Pendleton ( watch some dickhead bring age into now) he'd take it to the second half of the fight... possibly. Possibly cos we know he had a glass jaw, and the second a second one of 'enry's Hammers landed, it would be lights out. And cutting the glove wont help you this time.

Do you consider Lewis win over Klitschko as not being legit win?

Rules are clear. You beat you opponent, you won. Cutting his face badly = beating.

Unfortunate thread title once again. Why don't you ask how many fights out of 10 Ali wins against Cooper? He obviously won't cut him 10 times.

Thread titles like this are bound to trigger a shitstorm.

This thread adress a non issue.

Ali had to rely on cuts to win.

This proves he could not have beaten Henry Cooper in a real way :deal

    /End thread.

The use of smelling salts to clear Ali's head was dodgy, but were they really illegal back in '63?

I think another question that needs to be asked is "Could Ali ever EVT Cooper?" :think
