Monzon would have decked and stopped Duran by a tko by 10 after a sustained beating.

When it comes to boxing you just can't compare how two people fare against a common opponent it just doesn't work like that, there are too many intangibles, can't believe I'm having to say this on the classic forum. The Hagler-Duran and Hearns-Hagler fights are completely different. The fighters came into the fights with different approaches.

This, Duran's speed, defence and countering skill make Monzon honest and keeps it reasonably competitive ala Hagler

Hearns has a unique combination of speed and power, combined with his height and reach, which are a very bad match up for Duran. Add to that Duran may have been weight drained and he seemed to lack respect for Hearns coming into their fight, considering Hearns soft.

I don't think Monzon or Hagler have that same style to take Duran out

I could see Roberto's corner calling a halt to these matters somewhere
    after 9 one-sided rounds.

When Monzon was motivated, forget about it.

How is Duran going to be stopped from exhaustion?

ThinBlack has resurrected a lot of older threads lately.

I know Monzon is great overall, and particularly great at maintaining his preferred distance, but Duran was shorter, a great counterpuncher, and defensively only has to be ready for a jab, right hand, and left hook ever once in a while (mainly)...

Duran was more than capable of consistently defending against that repetitive and predictable arsenal, especially in a slower package like Monzon would deliver. Not to say Duran wouldn't get hit of course, but the guys who really whipped Duran had a large arsenal, were busy (or perhaps busier or more assertive), and fast of foot and hand...

I still have trouble seeing Duran overcoming the waterboarding-type approach that Monzon would bring. As I said, Duran would be fielding punches, and Monzon's timing and distance management would be the difference here.

I think the longer it goes, the less competitive it becomes. It may go the distance, or Monzon may a fight-changing right anywhere mid-late fight...

You are right on both posts, thank you. Hagler Duran was a snooze fest, I watched on Cable, everyone watching in place i was at was disgusted, neither guy would step it up. Those defending it tried to pass it off as Great technical fight" which it wasn't.

Hearns did go after him way you fight Duran to win if you are slugger. Even in first leonard bout, when Ray Leonard opened up out of desperation more than anything else, he backed Duran off every time.

Monzon raely had his bouts televised in United States since he was popular in places like France. Only bout he had in U.S. was Licata bout. If he had fought in U.S. more often, his popularity would have gone up here. Hagler and Duran were always on tv on way up, and in first years of having titles. It developed them a giant fan base, many still around, or passing stories down on them. They deserve it, both were great, but Monzon was a beast, in ring, and disgracefully, , out of it too. Guy would beat Duran though, and Hagler, plus Hearns.

calm down. you sound like a fool. If the Hearns/Duran fight was not an outclassing I don't know what is. He hit Duran with everything he threw . I don't he missed. Duran was hit with probably 10 -15 clean right hands . The result was inevitable, and Hearns predicted a 2nd round knockout. Steward said after no way Duran was going to last the way he stood straight up. Monzon would be able to hit Duran with that same right, just not as fast as Thomas Hearns did.

Duran's corner should have thrown in the towel againt Thomas Hearns in round 2, but they let it go until Hearns knocked Duran cold, then tried to get Duran up before anyone saw it.

Duran would give Monzon hell, but Carlos would win a decision.
