Monzon was strong and that jab and that right. Duran may be over his head here.

Monzon is interesting about things like this, because he seemed to place no importance on getting KO's. He just wanted to bring the title home with him, however that may happen, and he seemed not to care how he looked doing it.

And Duran, while certainly no great middleweight, was still tough and very cagey, and it was going to take a concerted effort at a stoppage to take him out. Monzon just wasn't of that mindset, so Duran sees the final bell.

The fight would go the distance, the decision could go either way. Id lean toward Monzon but Hands of Stone has a chance of winning.

If he trained and was in shape absolutely .. Emile did, Briscoe did, Rodriquez did ... I doubt Duran wins but survives, yes.

Duran losses, it's just a question of whether or not he goes the distance. My feeling is that he probably would, but the score would be very one sided in favour of Monzon

It would go the distance. Monzon had too much at that weight but he didn't have exceptional speed which would help Duran be competitive. Duran would hurt Monzon at some but Carlos would win on points.

King Carlos Monzon was a natural middleweight, he could take a good punch, also he had a very punishing left jab to keep an aggressive fighter like Roberto Hands Of Stone Duran at bay, to set up that very punishing right hand. The fight goes 15 rounds, Carlos takes it by unanimous decision. Both had mental toughness and a lot of self confidence, it turns out to be a very competitive bout until Duran falls prey to exhaustion late into the championship rounds. Monzon would then begin to rake Duran with combinations.

Duran survives to hear the final bell. Monzon wins a clear UD.

    He wasn't.

Monzon wins, of that I have no doubt, but I think Duran would go the distance. The only way I can see Monzon stopping Cholo is if he spends rounds upon rounds using the tactics he did to stop Napoles. A big, great middleweight going at Duran like that would do the job, but Monzon never really did that to people. I think Duran gives him a tough, hard fight, but Monzon, like Hagler, is too damn big, and too damn good.

Although it'd be interesting to see how Monzon deals with someone marginally smarter than him, since the only guy he fought who was remotely smarter than him, IMO, was Emile.

If Duran fought Monzon the way he fought Hagler, he'd survive comfortably, though he'd lose on points, like he did with Hagler. I don't know where Monzon gets this rep as some destroyer. He was a patient counterpuncher who gradually picked off his opponent over the fight. If you had good skills and a solid chin (and Duran had both), you could go the distance with him. Plenty did. Even Jean-Claude Bouttier went 15 in their second fight.

Carlos has one plan in mind: To destroy Roberto Duran. And the way Monzon was built, he is going to do it. Carlos by 3rd round kayo.
