Could Roy Jones Jr. have won the heavyweight championship from someone like Andy Ruiz Jr.?

Just went and watched some of Jones vs Ruiz to refresh my memory.

Id actually bet money on Andy beating Jones. I just dont see a case for Jones here.

Jones at heavyweight would be leaving Andy plenty of opportunities... and theres a difference between 6'4.... 6'5" inch fighters keeping distance than there is with a 5'11" fighter keeping distance. Jones obviously has good footwork but he still leaves opportunities for his opponents to work and I dont think his frame and style is conducive to keeping Ruiz off of him successfully.

In just the first round againt Ruiz... Jones traded while standing, guarded up, ect. (As opposed to simply pot shotting) Something the undynamic Ruiz couldnt capitalize on. Andy would be throwing fast combinations when Jones plants his front foot like that. I just dont see how it ends well for Roy.

i tihnk he can, Ruiz has fast hands but widely inaccurate and too unfit and slow to mount and maintain offensive on someone so mobile and accurate.

Was Jones 35 already against Ruiz? Really?
    Thats crazy.

Wonder how he would have looked had he moved up sooner.

Agree with this. John Ruiz is a statue compared to Andy with regards to how he lets his punches go. Andy throws fast, he throws in combination and he's aggressive. John tried to hit first (never gonna really work against a speedster like Jones) and then tie his man up. Two totally different fighters and I'd also put money on Andy stopping Jones. John Ruiz was made for Jones.

Not sure I would bet on the much smaller Jones to win.... But, he certainly has a chance. This overrating of Ruiz is becoming comical. In any other era (including the shitty Klitschko era) Ruiz never comes close to winning a belt..... Except, possibly against John Ruiz. ( I consider John Ruiz to be one of the worst belt holders in history.)

Well, I actually dont agree. Ruiz cut the ring perfectly to joshua. Not a single problem with his footwork. A very good sense of the place where he is standing at any moment.

I dont find it easy to run from ruiz for 12 rounds. I havent watched his early fight's though, and it could be possible that you are right and he had those problems at the beginning of his career, but 100% sure he doesnt have them anymore.

On topic, people forget always roy's china jaw. I wouldnt put my money on him in this fight, tbh. First left hook and bye bye roy...

Roy Jones would've had a very good chance vs. Andy. You guys really discount John Ruiz alot. He was un-entertaining but was normally very effective. Other than David Tua (one of the most brutal punchers ever) completely blowing him away and Roy and Toney's dominant schooling (two of the most high level boxers ever), Ruiz was never really dominated by anyone else in his entire career (prime or even post prime). 98-2005 John Ruiz would be top 10 as a HW right now.

Roy definitely had the ability to out duel and outmaneuver Andy for 12 rounds. Not saying he would have, but the possibility is definitely there.

so you think fat Ruiz is faster than the LMWs, MWs and LHWs that Jones was able to evade?

AJ has the power to stop Ruiz and managed to hit Andy, so could hit the unskilled John very easily.

Jones got caught at times by the slow fisted John R, he was quicker at the lighter weights.

Fat Ruiz is faster than John Ruiz and throws in combination, is what I'm saying.

Fat Ruiz hits 10x harder than all the toddlers that RJJ fought and given RJJ's glass jaw, he would have knocked him out, is what I'm saying.

This. I’ve seen Ruiz spar plenty of times over the years and he struggled with smaller guys with quick feet, so a prime Roy Jones would’ve been a nightmare for Ruiz.

Roy was slower at heavyweight than at Middleweight you pathetic moron. And yes size will play a factor here.
