Say RJJ and Michael Spinks were in the same era and Spinks got offered an incredible amount of money to come down from light heavy to super middle weight to fight RJJ.

    1. Could Spinks make the weight
    2. Could he beat RJJ at 168

Michael seemed to come in around 172 or 173 fairly often by memory, and that was in the time of the same-day weigh-in. So I’d think he could sweat down to 168 if he had a day-before weigh-in to rehydrate (I’m sure Roy didn’t walk around at 168).

Now Leon would have had to do some serious sweating to make super middle, haha.

Do you think Michael Spinks could make 168 with same day weigh ins?

Make it? Probably, but just barely. Recover from it in time to fight with any strength at all? Doubtful.

It’s possible but probably wouldn’t have been in his best interest. Spinks would have been weight drained and Jones was the type of fighter to take advantage of that.

Could he with same day weigh, i say yes, however should he, then i concur with mr magoo, it would not have been in his best interests.

All risk for Mr Spinks and i fear no reward, just a big fat old L on his record.

Didn't he come in at 170? I seem to recall him weighing that low

Michael Spinks weighed in the 173-175 range and fought 8 hours after the weigh in. Cutting to 168 then having 36 hours to recover? Why would anyone think that such a thing would be problematic? Spinks was kind of an innovator in boxing conditioning when he brought in the Shilstone guy as an s&c coach many years before that became a normal thing.

No. Would be extremely dangerous for him to do so and then step into the ring 6-12 hours later and fight. Think Chad Dawson v Ward but even worse.

Without checking his as and when weight history, I would think coming in as low as 168 lbs would have to take from Spinks but he could get that low in all possibility.

The second part of the question addresses his viability at that weight - as in, could he beat Roy?

He would be Spinks lite in every sense of that term - but possibly (likely?) still have enough to beat Jones Jr.

    OK.
Would Roy be able to make 168 with same day weigh ins? I don't believe that he ever weighed in on the same day. It is very likely that he weighed 168 when he fought at 154, and was 180 when he fought at 68.

Looked it up. He did indeed come in at 170 1/2 for his penultimate light heavyweight title defense vs. David Sears.

Typically he was 172-173 1/2 ish for most of his title fights in that division. I could see him at 168 on a sameday weigh-in. He’d be sapped, but I suspect Roy would too unless you’re inventing some kind of handicap match where RJJ gets day-before weigh-in but Michael does not.

Roy also gets brass knuckles under his gloves and Spinks has to fight standing on one leg
