This may not seem as wacky as it sounds.

At first glance, the idea of welterweight-middleweight SRL taking on even a small heavyweight is preposterous but let's take a look at this scenario.

Leonard was about 5'10" with a pretty good reach. Quarry was maybe a tad over 6"0" and was short armed for a heavy. Leonard's best fighting weight varies anywhere from 147-160. Although likely at his best at welter, he proved he could fight and even excell at heavier weights. Quarry's best weight was 190-195.

Let's say the Leonard camp insists that for this fight, Quarry has to be below 190. Quarry, wanting the huge payday, agrees to this. Leonard beefs up to 165. Even at that weight, Ray is much quicker in hand and foot than Jerry. Could Leonard outbox and outpoint his slower foe or maybe even bloody him up for a stoppage?

In this hypo situation, 25 lbs. is a lot to concede but many on this board think Rocky Marciano could beat fighters like Ali, Holmes, Frazier and others despite giving up 25 lbs. or even more. Any thoughts?

personally, i think the difference between 165-190 is a lot bigger than the difference between 210-235 let's say.

jerry could lose, even get stopped on cuts. often though, jerry's cuts and smaller size bely his strength, toughness and punching power. he was a very solid heavy, tough as nails and could whack.

i think if leonard puts on his dancing shoes like hagler and quarry is weakened from making 189, then leonard could pot shot to a decision. more likely though, after 4 rounds jerry starts to corner him and work the body.

leonard was unimpressive above 160. to be honest, i think he was unimpressive above 147 save for one fight against hagler where he looked good executing the perfect plan. at 165, he wouldn't be fast enough to avoid a healthy, motivated quarry. his body would get worked and by the eighth he'd slow down

and when he slows down, he gets murdered...

Leonard was too weak at 168, at 190 he would be a ragdoll, if he had a good nutritionist to get him upto 175 of lean bodymass while maintaining speed then maybe...

    No.

He could run for a while but he would get caught eventually.

Quarry by one of the most brutal ass whoppin's in boxing history. This is a man who beat Floyd Patterson and fought a fight of the year type fight against Joe Frazier. SRL would be wise to stay as far away from this as the geographical limitations of planet earth allow.

Quarry cuts off the ring and knocks Leonard for six.

Not really, if your going to put a guy like leonard in at heavy i'd actually give him a better chance of beating someone a lot bigger like say samuel peter than Jerry Quarry. Both of them if they hit him are going to knock him the **** out but a smaller heavy with more speed and skill is actually far more likely to catch him, whereas i don't think it is totally inconceivable someone as slow and basic as peter could be outboxed over say a 10 round fight.

    Leonard wouldn't have a chance.

p4p he's better than Quarry but lets be serious here. Even under your scenario, Jerry would batter him back down to the lower weights.

At some point size does matter.

Quarry would eventually, in less than 6 rounds, catch and dispose of Leonard, by a brutal knockout..maybe not as expected by some delusional "experts", but as physical reality would logically dictate, and then would recieve no credit at all for the achievement, in a truly no-win situation.

Hearns put Leonard down several times......and Quarry hits like a heavyweight and can box too.

    Quarry in 3-6 rounds max.

As much as I like Sugar Ray Leonard, I would be betting on Jerry Quarry in this one.

I don't see Leonard having the power to keep Quarry off, nor the physical strength to do much of anything in close, nor the durability to withstand a charge. Quarry would handle such an aspiration the way that HWs are obligated too, though modern HWs have forgotten it, that is, charge the smaller opponent like a rhino and give him an old-fashioned beat-down.

If Quarry decided to try to outbox Leonard, then we could see a different scenerio, but then Quarry would be John Ruiz.
