Jerry came in at 193 for Spencer, his most dominant career extended performance, and a contractual limit of less than 190 pounds would never have posed him any difficulty. But even if Ray's camp additionally stipulated ten ounce thumbless gloves and a 24 foot ring, he couldn't succeed in this situation. Jerry's hands were as quick as any heavyweight of his era. He'd be thumping the lighter man's body immediately. Ray did not have a heavyweight chin. Finally, when did Leonard ever cut anyone with his fists? Even with Mackie Shilstone helping to build his body up, Ray's chances in this one are virtually zilch.

 

Ray Leonard was succesful in his prime for one major reason....HAND SPEED...How is Leonard going to tack on twenty or more pounds, and lose his main asset,against a Powerful and rugged 195 fighter, like Jerry Quarry?By certainly being knocked out..Say I...Why put such a burden on a great Welterweight, by putting such an impossible task on his shoulders ?.Of course Leonard was a much greater P4P fighter than Quarry every fighter should know their limitations...Quarry Ko in three rounds...

 

Although I wouldn't bet money on it, what you say is a very real possibility... Tommy Hearns even fought at cruiserweight for a very brief period near the end of his career, and was very close to Jerry's prime weight, and might even have been a tad taller.. Hearns had the right style, height, reach, strength and power to at least challenge Quarry.. Leonard would not be able to earn his respect though.

 

Remember Lalonde dropped Leonard and caused him all sorts of problems at 170ish. And Lalonde was SHIIITTTTE !

If they powerlifted their way to a solid 180pounds, i doubt Jerry Quarry would stop them with one body shot.

Tommy Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard are by far better boxers then Jerry Quarry.

 

Stonehands nailed it. This wouldn't be Jones/Ruiz. Quarry would act and fight like HW should against a smaller opponent and that would seal the deal.

Maybe Ross Puritty or David Bey but no he wouldn't stand a chance against Quarry.

This thread is surreal ! There's no way that Sugar Ray Leonard could beat a class legit heavyweight. I consider Leonard to be one of the best pound for pound fighters I've seen,but winning against heavyweights ? :huh He had problems with Donny Lalonde,a LIGHT-heavy before settling down and stopping him. And,in my book,this was n't even a legitimate light-heavyweight fight. The bout was made for the Super-middle weight limit,so Lalonde's title should n't have been on the line in this one. Only the vacant 168 lb one. Anyway,back to the point. Quarry chases Ray down and stops him in four,maybe five,rounds.
