I wouldn't underestimate Hagler's ability to adjust in a fight, though. He moved from orthodox to southpaw effortlessly. He could stand and trade or spear you with jabs from the outside. Lot's of great fighters tried, and failed, to figure out Hagler.

I think you might be able to compare this fight to a RJJ vs Hopkins. For some reason Hopkins can nutralize opponets speed and punch out put. I see SRL by close SD.

Hagler was clearly past his best and still arguably won the fight.

Prime Hopkins, as well as prime Hagler, both beat this version of Leonard at 160lbs. You can never count out someone like Leonard, but the SRL that fought Hagler would lose to peak Hopkins IMO.

    That works both ways though.

SRL was past his prime, most definitely out of his prime weight and had the long lay off to boot.

That is my point. The Threadstarter asked if the Leonard that beat Hagler could beat prime Hopkins.

Prime for prime it's difficult to say, but the Leonard of the Hagler fight would not be able to do it.

Leonard was a welterweight, so of course he was out of his prime but that is the version that would be fighting Hopkins.

    I think it's possible.

He "beat" Hagler - though I think Hagler actually won that fight - but the judges gave it to him mainly for his flurries and activity.

I could see him doing the same sort of thing to Hopkins - just being more busy and winning an SD or even UD, despite Hopkins possibly landing the more telling blows - sorta like Taylor or Calfaggie (<- neither of whom I think beat Hopkins, though Taylor deserved a draw in their first fight IMHO).

IMO Hopkins would beat Leanord.... Hopkins would figure it out within the ring, and execute. He would do anything necissary as well... even if that ment mauling Leanord on the inside by using his strength and clinching, rabbit punching and the works....

Nobody is really taking size into account here... As great as hagler was, he was 5'9'' tall.. SRL was actually TALLER then the champ by just a tad and only trailed in reach by what... an inch or so?

... when fighting a 6'1'' bernard hopkins, BELIEVE me it will change the mechanisms of the fight. And yes i realise Hearns was 6ft 1... but he IMO doesnt have Hopkins dirty and crafty style or strength (power is not strength) IMO when he fought SRL.

I dont know... i just think Hopkins will do what he has to do within the fight and win it.... 8 rounds to 4.

    imo
