Nat Fleischer once remarked of Baer "Greatness might have been his, had he learned to box.. And set up a defence". So with that in mind, is it reasonable to say that the best of Max could never beat Sonny Liston, at his best? Max, who destroyed Schmeling meets Liston, who kod Folley? And 15 rounds to decide.
Hmm could he if he got lucky? Sure. Would he? I don’t think so. Liston stops him in similar fashion to Louis.
Liston had a fasr better jab and an 84 inch reach, he would catch Baer with that ramrod jab easily and take Baer out with one of his hooks.
I don't think so. Baer is one of the least impressive heavyweight champions that I have watched. Liston could hurt you multiple ways.
Could? Yeah, probably. Baer was a very dangerous fighter. Would? Not likely, Liston had too good jab for Max to overcome. That said, I disagree that Liston would destroy him like Louis did. Louis was much faster than Liston and that was the main Baer's weakness. Liston wasn't faster than Baer and Maxie would definitely have his moments. I'd bet on late technical stoppage, similar one to first Nova fight.
No doubt he was naturally heavy handed. I'm not knocking him, he did win the heavyweight title and was great in his era. But when I watch Liston fight, I see a much more versatile/talented guy.
Baer could get to Liston just like C.Williams, but Max hit even harder than the Cat and size wouldn't be a issue here. Max by KO
The champion with one of the longest, most powerful jabs in HW history, against a stiff, can't-slip-a-jab-if-my-life-depended-on-it guy? Hmm, that's a tough one…
Williams was flattened in 3 and 2 rounds respectively. And it's debatable whether or not he had more power than Williams any way.
Great chin, average handspeed, and right hand which was telegraphed. The way a prime Baer capitulated to Louis does not augur well for him against Sonny.
