Liston would absolutely dissect Baer. Technically they're levels apart. Baer makes far far more defensive mistakes that Liston would pick apart brutally
All is relative of course, but he wasn't fast. Baer struggled the most with fast boxers and he wouldn't be at disadvantage in this aspect against Sonny. Louis had much faster hands than Liston and that gave him huge advantage over Baer who wasn't very quick-handed either.
I respect what he accomplished in his era and no doubt he hit like a truck but he did things so fundamentally wrong it drives me crazy. It's the same reason why I don't care for Deontay Wilder. Both those guys drive me crazy when they flail around and lift up their right foot when throwing punches. Tyson was fundamentally very solid and well schooled. He drove me crazy for other reasons mainly because he wasted his talent.
No he wasn't fast but to call his hand speed slow is a misnomer.Liston could also box well, going forwards or backwards he also had two fisted power and an ATG jab.Baer had a great overhand right and a great chin ,that's about it. Baer dropped decs to Uzcudun ,and Risko ,neither were good boxers or fast, Braddock was a decent boxer but not fast.
Yes, I agree with your post. That's why I see Baer win highly unlikely. Liston would likely outbox him and outslug him if he had to. I just don't think he would stop him early, Baer had hell of a chin. TKO in mid or late rounds sounds more realistic to me.
