Let's just suppose that any of these fighters were scheduled to face Ray Leonard and got under his skin like Duran did and thus enraging Ray to fight a fight he doesn't normally do.

Could any of the following beat the Ray who fought Duran in Montreal:

    Sugar Shane Mosley
    Oscar DelaHoya
    Tito Trinidad
    Antonio Margarito

I think he would've outclassed EACH of these guys but if he was enraged and just wanted to trade and hurt these guys who would have the best chance?

I actually think Mosley would have the best chance.

Watch Leonard-Duran I with an open mind.

Duran tags Leonard in the 2nd round from an OUTSIDE position. Ray admits that it took him a few rounds to come round properly. Duran was the boss at range so Leonard stayed close for safety. Ray took these tactics on because he was bigger, faster, more powerful and because Duran was winning the longer range exchanges.

Ray's normal way of fighting was to sit down on his shots. He was only a runner in 2 fights Duran II and Hagler. Even then he moved without engaging. He wasn't dancing behind a jab like Ali and he wasn't using angles like Whittaker. He was moving, moving, moving and then plating his feet and unloading.

I agree that he beats all of those guys.

Leonard beats them all in my book. No doubt at all.

Leonard beats all these guys pretty easily. Who would have the best chance?
I wouldn't give any of them much chance, but Oscar seemed to have a knack for keeping his losses close (except for the Hopkins fight).

I don't think any of the above names have a chance of beating Leonard, with Tito getting knocked out late, but the rest of them seeing the 12th round.

Margo would get beat, Leonard too skilled. Mosley makes a good fight, but again beaten on points, Oscar no chance imo, and Leonard would use good movement to set up his attacks against Trinidad and win that one aswell for me.

I think Trinidad would have the best chance if SRL fought like that.

Reason - No matter how annoyed SRL was, Mosely & DLH would still box & once Ray realised that these guys werent fighting & in fact were doing what Ray himself usually does & outboxes opponents then Ray would eventually box back because Ray the brawler wouldnt win enough rds vs SSM or DLH when they`re boxing, its not the style he`s used to.
IF, & thats a big if, DLH or SSM slugged it out with SRL, Ray would beat both, if they boxed & Ray slugged, they would win & if they boxed & Ray boxed, Ray wins. Ray might have been angry vs Duran but the only reason he never boxed is because Duran was on his ass fighting him all the way, if Roberto stood back & started picking Leonard off, believe me, Ray would stop slugging & start boxing which is exactly what I think would happen with Oscar or Shane.

Margarito isnt accurate enough to outland Ray even in a slugging match & I dont have to tell you that Ray aint gonna tire like Cotto, if Ray slugs, he makes life harder but still wins on pts IMO.

Trinidad can box a bit, can slug a bit, has great power & loves to come forward, Trinidad may get wobbled vs Ray & probably might even lose in a slugging match as Leonard has the superior chin but I think he gives Leonard most problems.

Ray used a little bit of footwork vs Hearns in their 1st fight but I agree that Duran II & Hagler were the fights were SRL showed his best leg-work (outstanding leg-work if Im being totally honest) but he hardly ever fought completely flat-footed like in Duran I either, he usually gave angles & kept some sort of movement going on.

Ps. That was the best punch of the fight landed by Duran from range in rd 2 but the fight was rarely fought at range at all so I think saying Roberto was the boss from range is a little exaggerated but all in all a decent post.

    :thumbsup

Assuming he'd fight aggressive: i think he'd beat all of those except for Margarito.

Now i know there's no way he'll fight Antonio like he fought Duran the first time around, but if he does, he's in deep trouble. Thanks to modern weigh-ins, Margarito is nearly a supermiddleweight who'd be fighting a real welterweight here. And not just a SMW, one who has an extremely hard jaw that Leonard won't crack, one who punches very hard and has very good stamina to boot.

On the flip side, he is rather easy to hit and i expect Leonard to hit him plenty. But i just don't know if he can survive a war of attrition against him.

Leonard is not that proven as a middleweight in the first place. Sure, the Hagler win was great, but he did that by running. I don't doubt that he could beat Margarito that way, too. But going toe to toe? I doubt it...

I mentioned this in another thread about both Leonard-Duran fights. To my surprise I never got even a quote on any of my posts about it. Duran was the boss from long range, wasn't wreckless, and timed his punches very well from the outside. His right hand over Leonard's jab was a nice weapon. The half hook/uppercut from underneath with his left in the 2nd round which had Leonard seriously wobbled was thing of beauty.

No, but DeLaHoya had the best chance of anyone.
