Hard to make Main event shows work locally. you lose 50% straight back to the channel so promoter revenue is half. I like the fact they are trying the $30 shows - anything is worth trying - risky business though.
I think the suggestion is a good one, but have little faith it will happen anytime soon. I think we have more chance of a dedicated boxing or combat sports channel than mainevent attempting to do anything interesting with boxing, they make way more from wrestling (seriously who pays for that stuff?) and boxing a small piece of their pie.
It'd be nice if Leon could explain why the US public would want to fork out money to see oput local stars though...
I completely agree with Leon here. The coverage of boxing in Australia sucks and something has to be done about it for the sport to get anywhere near where it once was. The thing that pisses me off about the whole situation is that no one seems to care that they are getting robbed. Some of the US PPVs that we get are priced right and I agree that if you want to watch those you should have to pay for them (I for one pay for just about every UFC PPV because they're worth the money and I pay for some of the bigger boxing matches), but most of those cards are shown for free everywhere else but here. The fact that we have people who actually pay $50 for the Mundine circus whenever it comes to town shows that there's a problem. Honestly, they should pay us to watch that crap and I'm not saying that with the slightest bit of exxaggeration. The fact that there is zero boxing shown on free to air is a problem. The fact that most of the good boxers in Australia right now aren't big name athletes in this country is a problem. The fact that we get very little world class boxing shown down here is a problem and the fact that we have to pay for every bit of world class boxing that gets shown down here is a problem. I do like Leon's idea and I think it would probably work, but I think the real problem lies with the fact that Main Event is the only PPV channel in Australia so they have the monopoly of the market. If there wqas another PPV channel that could compete and sell either a wider variety of boxing/combat sports or the same ones at a cheaper price would force Main Event into bettering their coverage of our great sport. From next weekend until early April there's a good boxing card on just about every weekend, I'll be surprised if we get 5 of those cards shown here and IMO thats simply not good enough.
I've just finished a 12 hour shift, 10 of which saw me saturated in hyper saline water and I come home to read this. Pecks...you *****!
He's got a point though Leon: Who in Shitsville, Texas would want to watch a Hopoate-Mirovic re-match? They would never go for it, sorry but your plan is flawed beyond a doubt!
Mate i think it is a great idea, and i really cannot understand how people keep thinking you want to sell it to the US, you have stated many times locally only, i am feeling frustrated for you. Good luck
I keep telling the people in the ward that but they just tighten the straps on my straitjacket when I do.
The only problem I see with your idea is that a lot of people prefer to watch Rugby League on a Sunday afternoon. That and no American would want to watch Zappa vs St Claire.....
