Could Tunney beat Jeffries

Tunney on a very comfortable 15 round decision.

 

I think Jeffries would have been the favourite to win by a late stoppage. He was crouching and was difficult to be hit clean. He was stronger and tougher with a granite chin. He was also havier, stronger in the clinches, more powerful puncher and in my opinion technically skilled. I don't think Tunney is a better sprinter or can avoid punches better than Corbett. In the Jeffries vs Corbett match, the Gentleman Jim managed to survive until 23rd round due to his ability to duck a punch and his running across the ring. Jeffries' main weapons were the body punches and his ability to cut off the ring. Many times he managed to push Corbett to the ropes and scored severe body punches. Gene didn't manage to knockout Greb in 5 matches. He didn't manage to knockout a shot version of Dempsey in 2 matches. I doubt he would have had the power to stop Jeffries. He was not faster than Corbett and was definitely not as tricky as him. So, I think Jeffries stops him in 15 rounds.

If Jeff decides to take three in an attempt to give one, Tunney will stop him sometime within the 15-round distance.

 

I don’t think Gene could put a dent in Jeffries let alone hurt him enough to stop him but to each’s own. I could see a doctor stoppage at most

Tunney under the rules he fought in, wins a wide point’s decision with a possibility of stoppage over 15. His lateral movement was fantastic and he’s far more potent a puncher than Corbett with less wasted movement. Jeffries would have a better chance under his own era’s rules with grappling and mauling but I would still make Tunney a favorite.

 

I looked up if throwing was legal in Jeffries era, apparently it isn't. So I'll have to go with Tunney's boxing skill and speed.

 

I don't think that's the type of boxer Jeffries was. I think he either boxed at range or held and hit. The most success he had was breaking ribs while holding and hitting

Yes, I agree. I don't think that that was the type of fighter he was. You raise a very good point. I was responding to Mel's post. I still think Tunney would have handled him with relative ease.

The old timer here, what rules or rule, are you specifically referring to that would enable each fighter to be victorious in the decades you quote, just interested, no ulterior motive.
