    True :good

Ali was about 85% of his prime self.
    Leonard - 90%
    Dempsey - 65%

I don't know what others have said or where this thread has gone, but I think Tunney beats any version of Dempsey more often than not. Dempsey would catch him once in a while, but I think Tunney has just the style to give Dempsey a tough time in any fight they had.

What you saw in the seventh round of that rematch was the act of a desperate man.

Dempsey at his nimble best wouldn't have launched those kind of attacks unless he had him hurt to start with. Young Jack would have not only been able to catch Gene but trap him where his inside mauling would nastily introduce itself. That frenetic body attack had cooled when they met.

Something very few fans ever get about Dempsey is that he did not waste himself. If the roof didn't cave in after the first few waves he would stay on his toes and fight in spurts like he did against Miske, Brennan and Gibbons. The real difference between him, Marciano, Frazier and Tyson was that he had specific gears.

Jack recognized that his key weakness was an inability to retreat when things got hard, but as aggressive tactician's over 190lbs go, Dempsey was in a league of his own.

A similar fight to the one against Gibbons would be waged, but with a little more of that violent streak you saw in the 24 year old Mauler. Gene would jab, he would clinch, and he would sink in that cross a few times, but he would be getting chased around the ring by a fitter, more tenacious and sharper opponent en route to dropping a decision.

A stoppage is possible, but as Ted Spoon said, Dempsey would be fighting a more measured fight.

Seamus, stop posting in this thread and watch Vasquez vs. Pea.. so you can see Pea won, and thus gets another feather in his cap by you ;)

Don't have time right now. Gotta make a dollar... or euro... or pound... or whatever you people call money.

I will continue to offer my insights on this sexually charged topic.

Agreed, actually. But this can become a bit easy for Dempsey apologists to hide behind. However, by all accounts (anyone know the actual scorecards?), Dempsey won 1 round out of 20.

Gibbons took him 15 rounds winning 4 of them. Was that prime Dempsey? Could Tunney, a superior fighter, not achieve at least the same result if not a much better result?

A 180 pound Gene subsequently KO'd Gibbons, who was on an 11 fight win streak with 10 KO's, something that a prime Dempsey could not accomplish.

I am not emphatically stating that Tunney would win, but I would give him a better chance than those daydreaming about 1919.

But Seamus, Jess just beat a well past his best Johnson while being behind on the scorecards... surely that means he can lick any HW ever?

    Yeah, after 114 rounds...

Got 4 rounds into Whitaker-Vasquez... 38-37 for JCV.

    lol

Once you get further along... you notice how Pea starts to control the fight and does was Pea does... Pretty soon it will be clear to you that Pea deserved the nod... AND YES rabbit punching IS illegal ;)

one thing... it definitely seems the ref was playing his role in the script with over-urgent warnings about hitting and holding when it wasn't even there... ****, good thing Tony Orlando wasn't doing a Lennox Lewis fight.

I got through 7 rounds but have to get back to work.

This is one of the most blatantly scripted fights I have ever seen. While there is a break in the action in the 7th, Tony Orlando ****ing promises Whitaker and Duva that he will take a point away from JCV for low blows. How many warnings did he give JCV? I only heard one warning against holding and hitting. Furthermore, none of JCV's shots even look remotely low AND his body work was hurting Whitaker and setting up vicious lefts to the head. Meanwhile, how can you score these mid rounds for Whitaker while he is basically riding the Giro d'Italia, cycling away anytime the heat turns up. That is NOT how you take away the championship... unless you are already written down as the champ. This fight is a ****ing sham.

Watch the entire fight big buddy.... Whitaker lands more.. with a much better %... plus the deductions for JCV. They were CLEARLY fouls... there is no other way to put it. He keeps on doing it over and over. There were multiple warnings. Anyways, just finish the fight... JCV NEVER hurt whitaker in the least.. he was a bull a times but a bull facing a world class matador
