Am i alone in finding it astonishing that some members believe that Gene Tunney could defeat both Frazier & Foreman?

He is not stopping Frazier and no way does he outpoint Joe.

Foreman would just walk him down and as great a boxer that Gene was, George would cut off the ring at some point, then its all over.

    Opinions?

I think they would both catch him at some point.

I honestly think that Frazier would be his biggest nightmare.

    Frazier would stop him.

    Foreman, over ten rounds...interesting.

Foreman cut off the ring very well, Tunney would have to be ultra elusive.George had poor head movement almost non- existant ,so Tunney could find him regularly with that stabbing jab and quick right cross, but I feel Foreman would land something big along the way and slow the Marine down enough for a follow up bombardment.I think going for the body could be successful for George.

Staying out of a fight ending shot from Foreman may be a very tall order, but that scenario, for me, is much more realistic than lasting the full 12 or 15 with a prime Frazier.
I have always maintained that 68-71 Joe was quite simpy the worst opponent for anyone without top end power.

I agree with that. IN fact, i think i you couldn't KO him you'd lose to him. 70, 71 Frazier.

    I agree!

Frazier was a monster and only a monster puncher like Foreman could really keep him off. Frazier also was on the slide a bit when he met George. It may have not mattered honestly though as styles make fights and Foreman is all wrong for Joe.

Those who claim Tyson feared facing Foreman in the 90's say Tysons fear was based off Cus telling Tyson that Foreman would be a bad style matchup for us (Tyson) Cus of course assumed Foreman was going to stay retired, which of course didn't happen. I still feel cheated for never getting to see Tyson vs Foreman in 90/91.. It would havs been something to see.. Its startling to me to look at George around the time when he was finally making noise (and on HBO) against Rodrigues and getting some real consideration how much better he was then say when he actually recaptured the title against Moorer many years later (older) Tyson vs Foreman in 90/91 would of been amazing!!

Sorry to get off track, back to this topic... Though I respect Tunney he doesn't see the final bell vs either of these two. Frazier is to relentless and will stay on top of Gene all night and eventually break him down and stop him. Frazier at his best is a nightmare, if Ali can't outbox him (using fight #1 as a template) Tunney won't either.

Foreman is just to big, to strong and to good. He will land something early that will stun Gene and then he will finish him.

This is no knock on Tunney as I have Foreman at #3 and Frazier at #6 on my best Heavyweights of all time list.

    Agreed.

Do I favor Tunney over either of them? Perhaps not.
Is it blasphemy to pick Tunney to win? Hell no. For anyone who thinks that, I recommend rewatching highlights from the second Dempsey fight.

Tunneys mobility combined with his combos and speed is rediculous. Dempsey had to reach across he ring to stun him, and had to land 4 short fast jolts to the head to put him down.

I might actually favor Tunney over Foreman.
I'm having trouble visualizing Foreman cutting him off and dealing with his range control.

You would be justified in favoring both of them over him, but he still has plenty of options open to him.

This is a really clever guy, who is just a nightmare opponent for anybody.

Yes, Tunney could beat the both of them. He would handle Foreman the way Young did, except much better. Gene was fitter, smarter, stronger and a significantly harder puncher than Young. Regarding Joe, Gene would outpoint the relentless, but one-dimensional pressure fighter.
