Congrats to Vitali for being elected into the Hall of Fame. One of the overlooked wrinkles of his his record is the fact that both of his losses were in fights where he was ahead and injury led to the loss. Let's say Vitali never tore his rotator cuff against Byrd and managed to avoid being cut against Lewis.

    What would have happened?

I think it's safe to say he would have beaten Byrd. Would he have ultimately beaten Lewis? If he did, how would you have rated his chances of tying or beating Marciano's record?

He retired with a record of 45-2. He he avoided the injuries that led to his two losses, would he/could have found 3 more winnable fights to end his career?

Easily. If he really wanted to be a dick head he could have fought Manuel Charr in a trilogy. Probably would have sold great in America judging by when the fights would have taken place and the fact(NOT SAYING THIS IS RIGHT OR CONDONING) that an Arab dude would be having his head caved in by a white guy.

    No racist.

a fighter's win-loss record, along with the number of belts he wins, are often misleading and are used by promoters like frank warren and ze germans to milk a fighter's record while holding a paper belt to fool hometown fans and make good $$$ without fighting world class opponents
throw all that out the window and look at who they fought and when. simple and fool-proof.

I'm an idiot. I didn't see the part where you said he had to beat LL. No way. Unless LL is dumped into the ring by dump truck weighing north of 400 lb's AND he can make it past 3 rounds without bleeding profusely from his face against obese LL.

If he can avoid LL, absolutely.

Nah, I'm white, I was just saying these fights would have taken place not too long after 9/11 and the majority of men in the USA are white(I think.) I was saying I didn't think it was right, but at that time in the western world - at least the US - A LOT of people had a skewed perception of of arab and mediterranean looking people.

I thought the OP was asking the question could VK have got to or surpassed Marciano's record without having to fight LL.

I mean like anywhere else you got good and bad people, racists and non-racists, liberals and conservatives, and so on and so on. I'm not trying to say the country as a whole is obsessed with race, but it certainly plays a far bigger factor in things than Europe and other places throughout the world.

Long before "Al Queda" was even a blip on the radar for most Americans, there have been mass shootings. The majority of perpetrators? Since I've been alive, white dudes. A few months ago out in Nevada the biggest mass shooting in US history happened, 16 years after 9/11 mind you, and if you look at a list of tweets and posts on social media right after it happened(and same with any such incident since 9/11) all you see is "al queda this" and "al queda that." And then......... Sure enough, shooter identified. Non-mediterranean/Arab White dude.

Yes, if not for so many injuries from his kick boxing days he could have. Vitali was a six time kickboxing champion both pro and amateur!!!!!!! You should have seen his as a kick boxer!!!!!!!
