Well I know for a fact that atleast Chisora was Number 1 contender for one of the belts, and Hammer was ranked by a few, even if they weren't by Thr Ring or something.

Langford is usually my #2 all time p4p. He was a remarkable fighter with dynamite in his fists. He COULD KO just about any but given his stature that would be increasingly more difficult with larger modern superheavies. This newer breed knows how to play the big game very well and tend to pack a lot of power, Fury and Valiev withstanding. Most importantly the new larger fighters know how to limit their risk by imposing their size. That would play to Sam's disadvantage... Not that he couldn't or wouldn't pull off a big time victory or two.

I'm not an expert on that era. I know it wasn't terribly good, but that bad? :O

The answer is I'm not obsessed by Johnson as you obviously are! That's why I've only given cursory attention to the thread where he is matched with light heavies.

So you think that he has the firepower to stop the super heavyweights, you just don't think that he would get the chance to do so.

That offers Langford a potential route to victory.

Considering that even Ali would be to small, no, Langford would just be overwhelmed. Today’s heavyweights are superheavyweights, a different division and nostalgia, unyielding loyalty or mythology prevent many fight fans from seeing this fact.

KO's don't just happen because a fighter has firepower. They happen because a fighter can make opportunities to hurt his opponent before he himself is hurt. I see it as a case of limited opportunities, small windows at great and consistent risk, for a fighter like Sam, great as he was. And i don't think he would last long in the division. The punishment would just mount up too quickly.

That is the contract, that every fighter who consistently gives up height and reach signs up for, yet some have built up auras of invincibility.

This is the Langford Paradox (two capitals).

His physical limitations were what made him perfect!

Because he was 5' 7'', yet had the capacity to stop anybody, he basically learned everything!

He could circle a much bigger opponent on his toes, dart in and out of range, and if they bit on a feint god help them.

He was a trap setter above all else.

He might just have been the most dangerous heavyweight, in terms of one punch knockouts, that the sport ever produced!

I think you are taking things several degrees too far. His record was hardly immaculate in the big division and a mediocre heavy like Fulton fought him to a standstill whilevSam was never able to turn the trick that so many after him did an stop the Plasterer.

    Pump the brakes a bit...
