Following the tragic passing of Ruben "Conquerer" Castillo, who tragically lost his battle to cancer 2 days ago at the age of 68 years old, he has had me revisiting his biggest fights for the past days. I haven't watched his bouts against JCC or Laporte, but the guy was giving Arguello and Salvador hell! particularly in the first rounds of the Salvador bout he was (and also said by the commentator of the bout) beating the Mexican ATG to the punch with the very same favorite punch of Sal which was the right hand, if i remember correctly he was also ahead in one of the cards in the Arguello bout before being stopped. So what do you guys think? with the feats and prowess shown by the tough mexican contender, do you think he would've become a champion in other eras? Me personally i think so yes, if Barrios can become champion then Castillo could be undisputed!
There were certainly times when Ruben Castillo could have been a champion. In the current era of four belt holders he absolutely would’ve been a champion. During his prime, he’d beat all he fought except the very best and sad to say there are many champions now who are not the very best. In general, welterweight has been an excellent division through the years, but I expect there are a few other times for that history Ruben could’ve been champion. Rest in peace to Ruben Castillo.
