Ezzard Charles. Countered Valentino to death in 1949, but got hit a lot in return.

Matthew Saad Muhammad and Marvin Johnson. That’s what made their fights (especially against each other) classics.

Evander Holyfield and Jerry Quarry. I also liked Suzie's mention of Ezzard Charles. I also saw his fight with Joe Louis and I loved the way he countered. But Louis had a few pounds on him and still could clout when he wanted to and Ezz ended up with an eye closed after this one even though he would counter him 3 to 1.

A load of the modern obese heavyweights, mostly because they are too lazy to be aggressive or defend properly.

Charles usually had a great defense.

Charles was a highly skilled fighter with a great offense, but he was hit a lot on film. Even in his prime. He liked to counter but he also loved to brawl

    Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom ????
    207 wins 39 losses 26 "draws"
    19 KOs 2 KOs

      • Rosenbloom appeared in a number of movies and television shows.

      • At 37 he tried to enlist in the U.S. Army to fight in World War II. He was rejected because he had a perforated ear drum, which was the same reason for the U.S. Army's discharge of Sugar Ray Robinson.

      • Died in South Pasadena, California, of Paget's Disease.
1938-06-03 : Lou Nova 202 lbs lost to Maxie Rosenbloom 190 lbs by PTS in round 10 of 10

      • Location: Gilmore Stadium, Los Angeles, California, USA
The Los Angeles Times gave Rosenbloom seven out of the ten rounds, as he cut Nova over both eyes. The Times reported that "He (Rosenbloom) made the champion look so foolish, so clumsy that the youngster, tripping and falling over his own feet, not only had to beat Rosenbloom, but himself as well." Nova did win the first two rounds, punctuated by a hard left to the jaw that he landed on Rosenbloom in the 1st round.

Which modern obese heavyweights do you consider to be good counterpunchers?

Simon Brown was devastating counter punching in ko Terry Norris with right hand for title. But was equally ko himself with a left hook challenging Vincent Pettway for the title.

Just rewatched Marquez-Diaz and I was shocked by how often Diaz was tagging him with hard hooks to the face in the early rounds.
