Hi guys, I've been training as an amateur boxer for a couple months now, my coach is training me as a counter puncher. I'm getting there slowly, almost everyone at my gym is taller than me and normally outweighs me so it's been tough. I'm 5'10'' 160 pounds. Everyone I'm put in sparring is >175 pounds and >6'0'' Can you guys give me any good, technical counter punchers to watch and learn from? Are there any examples of counter punchers being able to close the gap on taller fighters? Preferably counter punchers that DON'T use the shoulder roll/philly shell. I don't particularly want to use that style (for obvious reasons :!: ) Thanks.
Tyson? Watch for head movement and upper body movement. Watch some Marquez fights, I can't remember who he fought but he counters the dudes jab with a right cross and follows it with a left hook right uppercut.
Since Marquez has been mentioned, take a look at Ricardo Lopez, some fantastic examples of superb timing and counterpunching.
