Uh huh. & let’s say the forum member were a war hero. Could he comment then? How about someone who risked their life to save a stranger? Someone who fought five men to defend a young woman’s honour? Tackled someone with a knife? You don’t know any of the backstory to anyone here. People criticise Boxers in all sorts of ways. This particular criticism should be done carefully, yes, but that’s for the individual to decide.
Fair point, yet its the cloak of anonymity that makes it a rather hollow argument for me. I'd have to be pretty sure of my own moral fortitude before casting aspersions on that of another human being. None of us truly know what we would do in the heat of battle or under extreme pressure. 'Heoes' are made through adversity. As Cus used to quip, the hero and the coward are exactly the same, the onlt thing different is the decision they take. I'm not comfortable labelling anyone a coward. Others are, and thats cool i guess.
Agreed fully that this is a thread lots of people - probably, most - would do well to sit out. But one thing not touched on yet (though it is implied in the D’Amato quote) is that bravery & cowardice can ebb & flow within the same man. Michael Spinks in my view was absolutely cowardly in that Tyson fight, but he certainly never lacked for courage up to that moment. One can be either extreme at different points in life.
If you havent been in the ring in an actual fight, best keep your opinions of cowardice to yourself, imo .
No coward gets in a ring . I've spared in a ring and I was C rap ! That makes me either brave or stupid !!!!
Because it's the truth? Duran was a bully and a coward, Benitez fight shows that and Lenoard 2 too. Liston? Cheated with substances to blind his opponents and quit twice. Baer was maybe not a coward, but he was mentally weak and was afraid to punch his opponents.
