Craig won on a split decision last night in the Staples Center in LA. I expected him to be a bit downbeat about his performance but not a bit of it. He had been warned by a number of coaches and boxers in the Wildcard that Darnell was awkward and wily and so it turned out, his opponent crouching and turning away mid round only to come on strong in the last 30 seconds of each round. That said, Craig felt he had lost only two rounds tops and couldn`t believe the split decision. Freddy Roach and Oscar De La Hoya concurred as did the HBO commentary team. Craig`s preparation was not the best. A stress fracture to a bone in his hand meant no sparring and heavy bag work. However he worked harder on his fitness than normal and felt that only his timing suffered from the change to his preparation regime. All the ring entry music was changed to Michael Jackson music(only in LA!) and he got the one that goes "can you feel it". The fight started scrappily but Craig felt he got on top in the 3rd and although neither fighter settled he was happy to go forward and felt he was comfortably ahead when he walked into a silly scuffing right which slit his left eye below the brow in the last round. After the fight Gary Young, who was in his corner for the night, had to hold his hand (big baby) while he got 9 stitches in his eyelid. Hopefully it will heal quickly because theres a possibility of a bout at the end of July. Gary was telling me that he couldn`t believe the support Craig gets from the Mexican fans. He said Craig was swamped by hundreds of them wanting photos and autographs as they left the venue. Gary reckons they loved the toe to toe stuff they saw against Vera and again last night. Personally I think Craig should avoid that stuff unless there is no other course of action but Craig is allowing himself to get sucked into wars too easily these days. Anyway his usual self criticism was no greater than usual and I get the impression that he felt he fought well in difficult circumstances. He tells me the fight is being shown on Five in the early hours of the morning so we might be able to judge for ourselves. Will keep you updated on his next bout when I hear. BTW Craig McEwan says "Save the Bunce ! He may be ancient but he`s not extinct yet!"
Thanks for that Grendal, unfortunately if he received 9 stitches the chances of him fighting in late July are almost nil. Unless they're putting him in against someone they don't expect can him him.
Always glad to hear from Mr Grendal:good Cant wait to see the fight, especially as Craig got the all important W over a potential banana skin, I had been doing my homework, & this opponent worried me. Just glad Craig got the W, & its onwards & upwards!
darnell boone is one of my fav journeyman absoutly pawned lajuan simon and dropped andre ward solidly. this is a great stepping stone and a good lesson.
Cheers for this, recorded the channel 5 show last night so will have a swatch when i get home quote from link below (nae bad boxing blog albeit HBO biased) "...When it started getting close to the last undercard bout (which was a wangdanger, btw – Craig “Braveheart” McEwan, Scottish acolyte of Freddie Roach, pulling out a nasty eight-rounder over a flashy hardhead from Youngstown by the name of Darnell Boone)..." http://www.nomas-nyc.com/scorecard/
Quite possibly my favourite jacko tune right there Macdaddy:good Although since jaco died, the song Ben has taken on a whole new level of sadness & greatness. Sorry for going off topic folks for a second, but its the king of pop we are talking about here.(man, saying the word "pop" makes me feel old) Funny thing was, big Tyson Fury maybe was the last boxer to come out to a Jacko tune when he was still living & breathing when he entered the ring to 'Thriller' a month or so ago, just random piece of randomness there.
Was this on Channel 5 boxing show, hope so, watch it the night ps. Smith, fits with the avatar of Coco-B-Ware?
