I`ve spent the last week on Islay with Craig, and although we promised each other that we`d avoid the subject of boxing, it wasn`t entirely successful, as I made him read the thread about his fight with Andrews on Eastside.I couldn`t shut him up after that! Firstly, our Mr McCafferty gets his vote for top Eastside poster! Free ringside ticket for his first title bout, Dunky! However, while he shares the frustration of many of the posters about the lack of top quality opposition who are prepared to fight him, he disputes that those he has been fighting recently are bums, as some have hinted. He is not one to badmouth fellow boxers but he pointed out that Darren Barker is now a European Champion on the strength of beating a guy who is inferior in ability to the likes of Brian Vera, Jamie Parison and, Craig believes, Kris Andrews. He finds it hard to believe that he is being criticised when he outclasses guys like that and as a result is now being ducked by the likes of Angulo and Lara. It seems, though, there are signs that things might be about to move. Freddy Roach was absolutely delighted with Craig`s performance against Andrews and is suddenly taking a pro-active approach in getting top class opposition for Craig. He has told Shaun Brown of Boxing News that he is looking to get a World Title bout before the end of the year and that he believes Craig would beat Kelly Pavlik and Yuri Foreman. The fact that Freddy is naming names suggests to me that there are specific plans in progress. Craig is delighted but strangely, or typically,he pointed out to me that there were more deserving candidates, naming Matthew Macklin as someone who he believes is worthy of a crack at a world title. Craig is an admirer of Macklin and was sorry he didn`t get a chance to spar with him when Matthew visited The Wildcard last month and when I asked him whom he most wanted for his next opponent he told me he would love a shot at him next. Its the closest you`ll ever get Craig to "calling out" anyone and he`ll probably deny he ever did, as he always holds the "I`ll fight anyone" line, but I swear he said it! The thing on this site that bugs him more than anything else is the contention by those who claim to have seen it that he really lost the Darnell Boone fight! Anyone who genuinely watched the fight would find it impossible to give Boone the nod, other than Darnell`s blind alcoholic uncle who must have been masquerading as one of the judges that night. Harold Lederman, sitting at ringside, had Craig winning every round and was "surprised", to say the least, at the split decision. I hope the above is of some interest to Craig`s supporters on Eastside. He tells me he never reads the forums but I like to wind him up with the more bonkers criticisms. I especially like the ones about him being "slow"! Keep them coming, they get him down the gym!
I like McEwan. He seems like a good lad. I don't think he has it in him to make it at world level to be honest. He shouldn't get a world title shot by the end of the year. He hasn't beaten anyone of note yet. He needs to fight one or two Euro level fighters to get into contention imo. Macklin still can't get one and he has way more impressive record. If you have his email, tell his people to get onto Brian Peters because Andy Lee still hasn't an opponent lined up for May 15th. If McEwan expects to get a world title, he should have no problems fighting him. Good step up for both. Make that **** happen!
Why would you compare yourself to Barker? Barker's fought bums as we well know so claiming to have better wins than him is fairly meaningless. That's like a young up and coming striker saying if Marlon Harewood can play in the Premiership so can he.
Hopefully his next fight will have meaning. Hopefully his team show a little faith in him from now on too.
Firstly i dont think everyone against craig i believe he has a lot of talent and have seen him since he was a wee boy boxing as far back as the tartan club and i do think he can go all the way in boxing with a little luck . craig has and always will be know as a clovie boy and him and his dad and family are very nice people so instead of picking fault back the lad and hopefully he box barker and so on. with regards andy lee they used to box on international duty together and no each other very well
I don't think there is anyone putting him down. Just discussing his ability. That doesn't mean we don't want him to succeed. This is boxing forum not a fansite for Craig McEwan (or any other boxer). For the record, I like McEwan and hope the lad does well.
In fairness to Lee, he has called out Duddy, Macklin and now Barker so he can't be criticised for these. I don't blame Macklin for not fighting Lee or Barker as he is on the verge of a title shot, whilst Lee and Barker are a step behind in their career. Barker, Lee, McEwan these three are all around the same level and say they want to step up the competition to get a world title shot. Why the hell aren't they fighting each other so. The fights make so much sense, they all have a decent fan base so the fight would generate more than some European journeyman who nobody knows. Pisses my right off.
Indeed, none of them are proven world class and yet they all (Macklin Duddy anyway) seem to want a direct title shotatsch Its like light middle 10 years or so ago when you had Takaloo, Alexander, Farnell, Williams, Stone, Roberts etc - turned out none were world class and they hardly foght each other. TOTAL SHITE
Agreed though I would have liked to have seen Alexander get a shot as his kill or be killed style could have produced a shock!!!
